Jacqui tells of mission to tribe in Thailand
By Helen Baldry
B aptist Missionary Society missionary Jacqui Wells visited Norwich Central Baptist Church recently to speak about her work in Thailand amongst the Karen tribe.
Jacqui, who is linked with NCBC and Costessey Baptist Church, explained about how the faith of the Karen people has grown. Jacqui works alongside a team who work with Karen women, teaching the Bible and encouraging them in their daily lives.
During her time in Thailand, Jacqui has seen a lot of progress – the Karen people are currently celebrating 125 years since the arrival of the first missionaries and the establishment of the first Baptist church. The verse the Karen people chose to mark their celebrations is Psalm 126:3, “The Lord has done great things for us and we are filled with joy”
Much of the work has been achieved through the dedication of Jacqui and her co-worker Yuleybay. They have established a strong team of ten women who are responsible for the work with the Karen people in ten districts in Northern Thailand.
Jacqui is optimistic about the future as plans are underway for a Jubilee Building to be built this year in Chiang Mai – 50 years after the work amongst the Karen women started. The building will house an office, conference facilities, guest accommodation and a handicraft shop to sell the Karen’s intricate weaved fabrics.
Jacqui has spent more than half her life in Asia is preparing to retire back to the UK in summer 2009.
