Rev Richard Lewis visits port
Eastern Area Regional Minister, Rev Richard Lewis, made a visit to see the work of Rev Peter Paine Port Chaplain at Great Yarmouth
Rev Lewis is one of three Regional Ministers for the Baptist Association in the Eastern area, and a visit to see the kind of work that goes on in the port.
After meeting in a local Baptist church the day began with a visit to the Gorleston Pier to see the River traffic and also to look out on the new Outer Harbour being built. The tour continued with being able to go into the Outer Harbour and see first hand the work that is going on. We were taken on a short tour of the work and shown what is happening and what the next steps are going to be. With the northern arm of the harbour now constructed, its full stem ahead to dredge the harbour to a depth of 11meters and to finish off the harbour arm with it final finish, and to get all ready for the new cranes to be delivered later this year. As we were looking large 40tons A trucks were ferrying to and fro, the sand cutter was spewing out sand and forming a little island, dumper trucks were carrying rocks to the Southern arm, it was just a case of everyone getting on with the job wile the weather was right for them.
Robert, our guide informed us that the operation goes on 24/7 in two shifts of 12hours. At 6am each morning a large Tesco delivery lorry arrives with the day’s food, which is cooked in two fully operational kitchens and also taken out to the vessels working in the harbour. There is no time for tea or lunch breaks.
Moving on from the harbour o ur next stop was at the Coast guards, where I introduced Richard to the people working in the control room. For the next hour Richards was taken through the detailed routine of what our Coastguards do looking after our seas, and beaches and in our case the Norfolk Broads.
Our final stop of the day was in the Historic Town Hall, where we met up with the Mayor’s secretary (Laura) and just informed Richard of the kind of work that is undertaken by the Port Chaplain in relation to Town Hall Staff.
All in all on a quick tour of all my work Richard departed for home, a lot wiser of the work that I get up to in this part of the Eastern Region.
