Church in search of a cross

Jessopp Road Church CrossJessopp Road United Reformed Church is undergoing a "facelift " at the moment and one thing they really want is a cross. Their existing one, made of boxed alluminium at the time the church was built, is showing signs of breaking down and needs to be replaced. Rev Chris Warner, who is managing the facelift project for the church said: "We are looking for a cross which will proclaim our Christian witness and mark the church as a place of God as well as a community resource. We thought, maybe there is a "redundant" church out there that has a cross, and maybe a congregation or PCC that would be pleased to see it proclaiming the gospel on an active place of worship. If there is we would love to hear from them".

The existing cross that is in need of replacement is about 10 feet high and four feet six inches wide although these sizes are not fixed for any new cross that might be available.

Any church that has a cross they feel could be relocated to Jessoppp Road should contact Chris Warner on 07824 316 966 or email him at goodwork@keme.co.uk

The Church is doing all it can at the moment to bring its buildings up to standard through what they have called "Project Facelift". This includes upgrading their heating an electrical instalations, repairs and decorations to the outside of the building, repairing, sanding and revarnishing the community hall and most important of all, improving access for diasabled people into the building.

The church has produced an appeal leaflet and the opportunity for people to provide a donation toward the work through a Gift Aid Sceme. This information and appeal leaflet is also available through Chris Warner. The leaflet says:

Jessopp Road is an active and well used community church

Group wwwJessopp Road has been faithfully serving its local community for as long as people can remember. Every week parents and toddlers, pre-school kiddies, children and young people, elderly and vulnerable people, and many others all benefit from activities and services that are provided in and by the people of this community church.

Most of these activities are run entirely by volunteers and around fifty people regularly give of their time and talents to make Jessopp Road the lively place it is.

Whilst there is a worshipping congregation at the heart of all the activities, the services of Jessopp Road are offered openly and to people of all faiths and none, young and old and everyone in between. The aim of the church is simply to be there for the community.

It is an enormous challenge to consistently offer the services we do and we can always improve. But just now, what we need to improve is access to our building and a basic face lift to make it more attractive and effective. We’re not talking about just looks. We need to upgrade some of the basics of the building so that everyone who comes in benefits from a healthy and safe environment

Stiching quiltOne user said: “What I like about Jessopp Road is that it’s a local church serving the local community and no one’s afraid of having a go to make things better for people”. Someone else said: “I’ve made some real friends here and it really gives a shape to my week, everyone looks after each other.”

What we hope to do under Project Facelift and what it costs
  • £6,000 Repairing all the old windows and rendering, painting all the walls   and  external woodwork
  • £3,000  Replacing or repairing all the gutters
  • £16,000 Upgrading the existing and creating new disabled access to make it   easy for everyone to use the whole building
  • £300  New changing facilities for babies

  • £4,500 Improving heating system to make it more effective and environmentally friendly
  • £5,500 Upgrading the electrical systems
  • £3,000 Upgrading the community rooms
This makes the total cost of all the work we need to do £40,800
So far we have managed to raise: £24,000
This means we still need to raise (mainly for disabled access): £16,800

Please can you help us reach our target?

This seems an enormous amount of work but we won’t let that put us off and we’re already well on the way. Over 300 people of all ages use the premises regularly every week for their community activities and a lot more benefit from the special activities and events that take place. Many of these people are vulnerable or in special need and all are very local. Jessopp Road is a real Community Church and we are determined, with your help, to make it an even better place to be. Please will you support this project?
