Tributes have been paid to workplace chaplaincy leader and Norwich Area United Reformed Church minister Chris Warner (pictured right)who died earlier today (May 21) from an asbestos-related illness at the age of 61 at Priscilla Bacon Lodge.

Chris was team leader of Good Work (Norfolk and Waveney Industrial Mission) and was previously Industrial Chaplain in Great Yarmouth and Director of Community Connections, a community development organisation set up by Great Yarmouth industrial Mission.

Since he took over at Good Work, around three years ago, he also served in a half-time capacity in his ministry as a Strategic Team Leader with the Norwich Area United Reformed Church in Norwich.

Chris has formerly served in ministries with Salford Urban Mission and South East Manchester and leaves his wife Kath and two sons Peter and Nick.

Barry Capon, Chair of the Good Work Board and Joint Church Meeting Convenor of the Norwich Area URC, paid tribute to his colleague:

“I know that all of the members of the URC in the Norwich area and people of all denominations and all faiths in a much wider part of Norfolk will want to send their sympathy to Kath and the boys at their sad loss.

“Chris suffered from the dreadful asbestos-related disease of mesothelioma and has deteriorated in health over the last few months. Chris was a man of great faith and of enormous energy and enthusiasm who delivered great improvements for many people by using his drive and encouragement to help, and even push, others to doing what was needed.

“We will all miss this significant member of our Christian community but we should all be grateful for the time he spent with us and what he achieved.”

Funeral arrangements will be added when announced.

Chris will be be very much missed by the Christian community. Although he had moved to Norwich before Network Yarmouth was set up, it was his vision that led to the inception of this very successful website

I have known Chris for many years through the IMA.he kindly and publicly welcomed me as Team Leader of Cambridgeshire Chaplaincy to People at Work at the end of January 2007. We worked together on strenthening Industrial Mission in the Eastern Region. I spoke to him while he was ill on the phone.I was very moved to receive God's Blessing from him while he was slowly dying.Such was his strong faith.

May he rest in peace.

It is with great sadness that we have heard of the passing of Chris Warner . He had a profound influence not only in his recent work in Norfolk , but throughout the nation in Workplace Chaplaincy . he was an excellent communicator , a lively debator , and a stalwart man of faith . He was for some years editor of the IMAgenda , and his writing influenced many . Chris will not be forgotten . On behalf of the Industrial Mission Association we offer his family and friends our deepest condolences and prayers . Stephen Hazlett , Moderator IMA , and Indus. Chaplain in Sunderland .
