BMS names new head of mission

A GIFTED minister who has led a Street Pastor team in one of the UK's biggest cities and whose church supports more than 25 people in overseas mission has been recruited to a top rolethe baptist times at BMS World Mission.

The Revd Peter Dunn, 46, will become the organisation's director for mission in November.

Mr Dunn (pictured) is associate pastor responsible for mission and discipleship at Queen's Park Baptist Church in Glasgow, where he has served for the last five years.

He is married to Jane and they have two children.

He originally trained as a quantity surveyor, before he and Jane sensed a call to world mission in South East Asia and went to All Nations Christian College for two years.

Health reasons prevented them from taking up an overseas placement after college.

They refocused on ministry in the UK, becoming involved in church planting in London and Nottingham before moving to Mr Dunn's current role in Glasgow.

He has spent three, two-month periods overseas in D R Congo (1985), the Philippines (1992), and six years ago as a whole family with BMS in Brazil.

He has also made a number of other shorter visits. As well as leading street pastors in Glasgow, he has been instrumental in sending and supporting more than 25 people from Queens Park in overseas mission over the last few years.

'I'm very excited to be joining a mission agency with such a huge history,' Mr Dunn told The Baptist Times.

'Health reasons stopped us from serving overseas 25 years ago, and we struggled to understand why, so we have a real sense of God's call about this position.

'On my heart is having confidence in the Gospel message - it's as powerful today as it's ever been.'

The BMS role was vacated by the Revd David Kerrigan when he became the new general director, succeeding the Revd Dr Alistair Brown.

Mr Kerrigan announced the appointment to staff and supporters this week.

He told The Baptist Times, 'Peter is an excellent communicator, with a reputation for highly practical preaching and teaching.

'His work leading the street pastor initiative in Glasgow has also been highly effective, as has his involvement responding to issues of people trafficking in Glasgow.

'He has cross-cultural experience in other countries, and brings to the post a very positive relational style of leadership.

'Peter will be an excellent new member of the director team at BMS and is someone who will encourage and develop exciting new opportunities for our churches.'
