Salvation Army officially opens new charity shop

DSC00666Lieutenant Rob Symons welcomed all this morning, Saturday 19th September, to the official opening of the Salvation Army's new charity shop premises on King Street in Great Yarmouth.  Lieutenant Rob paid tribute to the efforts of the local Salvation Army members/volunteers and his predecessor, Captain Nigel Byrne, who had worked so hard in making the move from the previous premises possible.  Lieutenant Rob gave a brief history of how and why the move had been necessary, in that they previously had a charity shop in the area but saw the need for a move to bigger, newer premises to better serve the local community.  They did so well to move the stock out, temporarily base it in our church in Tollhouse Street until the new building was ready and then move to King Street around seven weeks ago

He also gave warm thanks to the Cox family for the free occupation of those previous premises on Market Row.  Rob also introduced the crowd to Major David Jackson, The Salvation Army’s new Divisional Leader across Anglia and in the presence of His Worship, the Mayor of Great Yarmouth, Councillor Tony Smith

Major Jackson mentioned that, although he was new to his post in East Anglia, he was quite familiar with the town as he had visited many times before.  He said that the shop was indicative of what the Salvation Army in Great Yarmouth strives for in being part of the community and providing a place for fellowship, friendship and advice.  He read a passage from scripture that he related to the occasion:  from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount
Matthew 5:14-16 – “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot he hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven””.  Prayer lead by the Major followed

His Worship, the Mayor of Great Yarmouth, Councillor Tony Smith said that he felt privileged to be invited to take part in the occasion and thinks that everybody, whether Christian or not, appreciates the Salvation Army and the work they do

Major Jackson then cut the ribbon to enthusiastic applause and invited everyone to join him inside
