Christmas Shopping Beckons ....

“Money is a good servant but a poor master” goes the old saying – and yet a quick look at much decision making today seems to deny this, preferring to reflect the song lyrics from Cabaret that “Money makes the world go round”. Pick up many national newspapers or listen to any news broadcast and finance is a major focus – and yet by contrast the stories that grab the most attention are actually about relationships! Where do our priorities lie – with money or relationships?
Jesus was quite clear that the priority should be our relationships – his top two commandments were about loving God and loving our neighbour. And so when people from a wide spectrum – ages 0-100; artisans to professions; differing mother tongues and family connections across the globe – come together at church our emphasis is upon our relationships with God and with one another – and what joy we find!
Obviously money has a role – but it is not so much the driving force as the constraint within which we must operate – and our experience is that whilst the thought of more money might appear attractive, in practice we can have a good time with the resources that we have. An expensive purchase that leaves us in debt is surely counter-productive. Which of us at some time or another has not received expensive gifts that have really brought us little joy?
Shortly many of us will be beginning the annual process of Christmas Shopping – and what a difference it would make if we first thought about the relationships in our life that are really valuable; then recognised that we have limited money and so have to be careful in our buying; and finally moved on to think how we could develop our relationships with gifts that involve thought, care and time rather than lots of cash that we don’t really have!
Christmas – and indeed the whole of the Christian faith – is about a God who went to extreme lengths in His effort to restore relationships with mankind. It would be truly fitting and rewarding if we responded by giving priority to relationships, allowing money to be a constraint, in our Christmas preparations this year. And it would be even more fitting if we take time out in the coming weeks to explore how we can develop our personal relationship with God!
