News from the Morning Star Children's Home
Dear sponsors and friends of Morning Star,
This year has been an exciting year for Morning Star, in which we have actively spread the word of the charity through the internet, radio and church groups. The highlight of the year was our journey to Nepal to visit the home. This was a challenging and emotional trip w hich was necessary to ensure that the work at the right level to provide the best care for the children into the future. It was a real joy to see how the children are growing up and developing, especially some of the older children who have recently finished their college education and are now starting work and a new independent life.
During our visit we identified a number of important areas which needed improvement to the home. Although we were unable to make the improvements while we were there due to the national holiday for the Hindu festival Dasain; our son, Simon, stayed on for a few extra weeks and was able to oversee many of these improvements. Despite this, much work still remains to improve and maintain the level of quality of the home. Such as the need for a new jeep for taking the children to hospital and for getting the weekly shopping; as well as ongoing general maintenance, decoration and essentials. As we look to 2010, which will mark the 20th year for Morning Star, we pray that we can continue to keep the home running and to make the remaining necessary improvements for the future.
Finally on behalf of Bishnu, Muna and all the children we would like to thank you for your continued commitment and support which has helped change the lives of so many children. We wish you and your loved ones peace and joy this Christmas and New Year.Wendy, Harold and Barbara, and the Morning Star team. Our trip to see the children in September had taken many months of preparation, and one key task had been to find a cheap way to send the many donated handmade clothes, gifts and toys to Morning Star. Syfer Technology, Brian’s employer, came to the rescue by agreeing to pay the UPS delivery charges. God’s timing is so good. The delivery arrived a few days before us, which meant we could hand out the gifts when we arrived. The children had lots of fun and laughter and by the end of the afternoon each child’s arms were full of goodies. It was a happy day for all.
Please continue to pray for Morning Star, Bishnu, Muna and the children. We also pray for their health and s a f e t y a n d continuing support. Please Pray for Sunita and Jotie who finished their three year nursing college course in October. They are now waiting for their final exam results and are looking for their first nursing job. Please also pray for the recent older children which have f i ni s h e d t h ei r education and are now embarking on a new bright independent future. Please pray for Wendy as she continues to running Star.
New carpets all round
The children chose these nice new blue carpets as part of the ongoing improvements. Thank you for your donations which help to keep the home in good condition.
Depok opens Momo shop
We are delighted that Depok Ally, who was one of our first children, has left Morning Star having successfully completed his exams, and has now opened a Momo shop.Momos are tasty traditional Nepalese dumplings filled with meat or vegetable. Without your help and support this would not have been possible. We wish Depok all the best for the future.
Transport worries for Morning Star
Earlier in the year we learnt that Bishnu’s 18 year old trusty Suzuki mini-van had finally given up and gone to the great car park in the sky. While we were there our plans were to find a nice new or second hand van that would last Bishnu a good many more years. Unfortunately we were amazed and horrified to find that new vans start at 20,000 and even rather old second hand vans are about 8,000, which was more than we could afford.
For a nation as poor as Nepal this seems to be a scandalous amount to pay for a basic vehicle, which for Morning Star is an absolute necessity to get the children to hospital when they are poorly and to do the weekly shopping for the 50+ children. In addition to this we were also saddened to see that Morning Star’s remaining main mode of transport the Big Bus was also showing the signs of many years of use. So much so that we decided that immediate action was necessary to ensure the bus was in a fit and safe condition for the children to use. During Simon’s extra few weeks with the home he arranged to have all new tyres fitted and for the bus to go to be re-painted and repaired (shown at the paint shop being prepared for painting). Unfortunately we never did manage to buy a van for Bishnu, and this is a worry to us as it is his only means of transport to bring food home, and more importantly take a child when poorly to the hospital. We are currently exploring different options to get Bishnu a new van for the home.
New Bibles for everyone!
This year the Waveny Bible Society did a sponsored walk to raise money for new Bibles in Nepal and for Morning Star. While we were there the 60 new Bibles were delivered and it was a real pleasure to be able to hand these out to everyone at the home. The Bibles are a special version in Nepalese and with the words of Jesus highlighted in red text. Thank you to everyone at Waveny Bible Society. New kitchen equipment
Cooking for more than 50 children everyday is no small job. Which is why new spoons, cups, plates, pressure cooker and much more were brought to replace worn equipment.
