Latest News from BMS World Mission 18/02/10
We live in a fast-food, easy-answers, instant-gratification society, where, at times, it can seem like the long-term view is irrelevant and if we don't see results immediately, then there is nothing to see at all. But that is not the bigger picture one always sees in mission work. The history of overseas mission is, in many places, one of slow initial growth, of waiting years and sacrificing many lives before any fruit is seen. And while there are also many stories of dramatic, miraculous breakthrough, there are also many unglamorous stories of men and women of God, daily living out their faith, trusting that the seeds they are planting will one day grow and that the difference they make is one that matters to God.
This week, the BMS website celebrates the contribution of one of our former missionaries, as it is recognised formally by a university in India. We also hear of a project in Afghanistan that will not make everyone involved in it rich and will not fundamentally alter the security situation in the country, but will make a significant difference to the lives of women now empowered through education.
The slow process of building strength and understanding through physiotherapy and engaging with a family to change attitudes is also highlighted. To read more about the bigger picture of mission work around the world, click on some of the stories below:

Women in Afghanistan are getting a new start with business and literacy training. Elizabeth is a BMS worker in Afghanistan, working with several projects, including an education initiative that provides literacy and business-awareness lessons to young women in Kabul. Many of the women receiving lessons are also being assisted by a micro-credit project that helps them start their own small enterprises, and the combination of training and small amounts of capital are changing lives in a dramatic, very personal way.
