College Chaplaincy in Jeopardy

I have received news that Great Yarmouth College Chaplaincy is in financial crisis. The salary to pay the Chaplain will run out at the end of this month. Churches cannot ignore this desperate situation and lose the benefit of all the fantastic work put in over the past 12 years of College Chaplaincy

In order for it to continue, funding from the churches and other sources within the Borough in the region of £6-7,000 per annum must be raised

What about a special collection or, perhaps, give that little bit more or we will lose this chaplaincy among the students

Network Yarmouth published a report from Margaret Bazely in which she gave a brief outline of her work and achievements in her short time in post, from which I’ve taken a little extract below:

BAZELYThere have been some great opportunities to meet with members of local churches and pool ideas about how we might collaborate to benefit both the college and community. I would be delighted to extend these contacts further

My other duties have included providing one to one staff and student support, convening the weekly prayer meeting, meeting senior staff, visits to College Schools and Centres and the Nursery, sitting in on teaching and meeting the Student Union President to plan events. Future plans include welcoming Street Pastors in to the College in March and an Easter celebration

As you may know, the College recently received a visit from Gordon Brown to see the new Alchemy and Construction buildings. On the subject of alchemy... I witness miracles happening when impressive staff members, offering respect, compassion and care are combined with students bursting (or simmering slowly!) with potential and exciting learning opportunities. Lives are transformed here. I feel very honoured to be entrusted with this work and to see the miracles happening

If we don’t want to lose this valuable initiative, we must dig deeper into our pockets OR WE WILL INDEED LOSE IT

Can you let us have more details as to how much money is needed to fund the Chaplaincy and how that can be disseminated over Borough Wide Churches

The Chaplaincy needs £6 -7,000 pa to keep going.

Great Yarmouth College needs a Christian presence now more than ever. Every chaplain has brought their own unique contribution and in the short time Margaret has been with us her presence has been greatly appreciated.

There is a spiritual war going on in our world; this is not the time to pull the plug!

I had the privilege of meeting Margaret at the college this week – I was able to witness first-hand, just how much respect and admiration both the staff and students have for her. This clearly is a worthy cause, and such a unique opportunity to reach out to so many young adults, at a time when they’re trying to make sense of their lives and plan for the future. The Chaplaincy benefits the whole community (not just the College), and it would be fantastic to see the community now come together and extend their support for this work. Every penny helps – please dig deep and pass the message on!

The presentation to churches about 2 years ago suggested each church might give an annual donation of:
£400 pa from large churches
£200 pa from medium churches and
£100 pa from smaller churches.
There will have been some cost inflation but donations of this order would certainly help keep the project afloat whilst other parallel funding sources were pursued.

Completely agree that this is much too strategic to be allowed to disappear.

Margaret is reaching students in the name of Christ who are mosy unlikely to enter our Church doors. This is cutting edge mission: what message are we sending out if we cannot keep this going?

As a former Chaplaincy Co-ordinator at the college, I recognise the great challenges and opportunities that present themselves to us as Christians in that place. This is the REAL world in which we are called to get involved. If we, as churches and individuals,TOGETHER, can re-capture in our hearts the big vision that started this work over 12 years ago, then who knows what can be achieved, in God's name, in that place. This is a wake up call to us all - not a case of 'how much can we afford to give?' but 'how much do we need to give?' For my part, working at the college was a very special time in my life, a great privilege and I wholeheartedly desire for the work to continue.

Hi there everyone. Is it possible to get an update on this situation? I am currently looking into what we can do to support and will be in touch soon regarding this? God Bless you all in everything that you do for Him. ><>
