A meeting was held at the Cobham and Lichfield Centre in Great Yarmouth on Monday 15th November. Seven members from the four United Reform Churches in Norwich met in order to present a netbook to Revd Paine the Port Chaplain for Great YarmPETER NETBOOK PRESENTATION 024outh. The group organise events to raise funds for worthy causes in the area by promoting concerts and other social occasions

Peter responded to their generous gift by explaining in detail the nature of his work. He listed some of the problems experienced by seamen when in a strange country and amongst strangers. They often feel isolated, lonely and separatPETER NETBOOK PRESENTATION 011ed from their families and loved ones for long periods.  He also spoke about the many difficulties they encounter if they became sick and the ship continues its voyage. They have great need for an understanding and sympathetic ear! In these situations Peter is able to assist them by helping them to phone home by supplying them with a phone card.  One very useful facility Peter hopes to set up on the netbook is Skype which will enable the seamen not only to hear their family but to see them on screen. The netbook will also enable him to record important information on the spot.

Peter works very closely with the coastguards and invited the group to visit their operations centre in Havenbridge House North Quay Gt. Yarmouth. If an emergency arises they can call for his assistance day or night. Should a seaman sustain injury, Peter often goes with him to hospital. When he is discharged from hospital Peter arranges accommodation and then transport either home or back to the ship wherever that might be. Peter mentioned the tragic accident which occurred eight years ago when a helicopter carrying personnel to one of the rigs crashed into the sea with no survivors. Peter was deeply involved in this incident. A memorial service is held each year for the relatives in St. Nicholas church to commemorate this sad loss of life. The group thanked Peter for an interesting and informative visit which ended with a look at the outer haPETER NETBOOK PRESENTATION 018rbour.
