Healing on the Streets in Great Yarmouth
Dave Weeks
Pastor: City Church Great Yarmouth
Permission has been granted by the Great Yarmouth Borough Council for us to start the project 'Healing on the Streets' in the Market Place on Wednesday and Saturday mornings throughout the year. How frequently we do so will depend on how many local Christians want to be involved
'Healing on the Streets' (HOTS) is an initiative which began in a church in Coleraine, NI. It has proved such a success that many churches in this nation and overseas are doing likewise. HOTS consists of churches in an area working together. A couple of vertical banners saying HEALING are erected. Two or three chairs are positoned near these banners. Leaflets are then given out to passers-by which explain that we are a group of individuals from various churches in the borough offering to pray for them. Names and details of participating churches are also on the leaflets
If people say they would like us to pray for them we offer to pray for them there and then if they wish. Sometimes we pray for them where we are chatting or we go over to the chairs where we can sit down together and pray for them. We offer to pray for any need they may have. All this is done in a loving and compassionate environment
To see it in operation go to 'Healing on the Streets in Coleraine' on YouTube
Reports from around the country have been very encouraging, with individuals saying how helped they have been by the prayers. These reports vary from people having received comfort while going through hard times, to saying later that a particular situation has resolved itself since they were prayed for, right through to individuals saying that they are physically better of a complaint which was prayed for. In Wymondham recently, where the churches are working together doing just this in their market place, a man turned up at a church and told how all the pain went from his back as he was being prayed for, and that he has had no pain since!
As a result of this initiative many people have started to attend participating churches, with many becoming Christians as a result
I am particularly excited that a number of the churches in the town want to support this, and arrangements are being made to get this project underway as soon as we can
Local Christians can be involved with HOTS by being involved on the day by praying for people, approaching people to explain what is going on, or simply to give out leaflets expalining what we are doing. We also need prayer backing. A prayer meeting will be established where people can meet to pray while the team is out in the Market Place. We would also like people to commit to pray for this work as part of their normal prayer times
'Healing on the Streets' is a wonderful way of sharing the love of God with people in need in our town and we look forward to getting it off the ground
