On Sunday evening 18th December, the Yarmouth Salvation Army participated in an attempt to break the Guinness Book of Records. The objective was to beat th e existing record entry of 15,000. The united carol singing events included venues in Scotland, Cornwall, Wales and even Geneva.
The attempt required two adjudicators to ensure that everybody in the congregation was singing. One other requirement was that the congregation should be videoed in the attempt. Still photos were taken by a photographer as further evidence.
The backers of this project were Premier Radio and Bible Lands and at 6.50pm Premier Radio was linked to the audio system of the SA Citadel. The two radio presenters gave a 10 second countdown and a recorded programme of the carols was played over the air for the various congregations to follow.
Everybody sang with joy and enthusiasm the following carols:-
Silent Night, O Come All Ye Faithful, O little Town of Bethlehem, Away in a Manger and Hark the Herald Angels Sing
Lieut Rob Symons
People around the world were singing in unison with Gt Yarmouth. What a wonderful sound that must have been rising up to God. At 7pm everyone sang from the same song sheet and at the same time without a break for 15mins. The programme for Yarmouth was carefully planned and put together by the SA leader Lieut Rob Symons. Before the Carolling began Rob led out in a very thought provoking talk. Also there was an amazing performance of the Timberells which was facinationg to watch. Great evening Rob!
Providing all the conditions have been met, the standing record should be easily overtaken. We are waiting for the results – watch this space!
