News Update on Nurses for Nepal; the Norwich Diocese Lent Project for 2011
Wendy Bircham of Morning Star Children’s Charity Nepal, whose charity was chosen by the Bis hop of Norwich to be the 2011 Lent project, says:
“As we draw to the end of this year I can only describe it as being blessed by the huge support from Norfolk and Suffolk people towards the Nurses for Nepal project. God has truly been good”.
In Nepal there has been a flurry of activity in recent months as I try and secure Nurse training places for two of Morning Star girls.
Both girls; Eliza and Shanti Lama passed there Nurse Entrance Exam which has been paid for by the Lent Project.
Eliza is now studying Nursing at: - Gunaraj Nursing College.
Baluwatar Katmandu Nepal. You could Google this and see the college.
In November I sent money for her uniforms, a blood pressure set and her own thermometer and books. Her day starts at 8.30 and she comes home from college to ‘Morning Star’ at 4.30.
Securing a College place for Shanti Lama has been fraught with difficulties.
After taking her entrance exam Shanti was called to a family gathering in a remote village where she was out of phone contact. She did not know her exam result and her place at College was given to someone else.
On returning to Kathmandu she was devastated that she had missed her admission place.
However, determined to find Shanit a nurse college place to fulfil her dreams. I have been working hard here in the UK, and with the help of the principle of The Early Childhood Development Centre in Kathmandu, in the past week we have finally secured and paid for a college training place for Shanti. She is now enrolled at Dhanausa Nursing College in Janakpur which is on the boarders of Nepal and India.
Here in Gorleston I am at the present time in contact with the Director of Tansen Hospital Nepal who has family links with Norfolk, her father being a retired NSM in North Norfolk.
At Easter I am due to visit her at the hospital.
There I shall be looking at how best a donation from the Lent project can go towards a medical vehicle of some sort to aid this remote area of Nepal. I also want to ensure that the vehicle will to show on it that it has been funded by the Diocese of Norfolk UK Lent 2011 Project.
Ongoing funding from the Lent Project will be available for another training place next year; or the year after depending on a child's age and wishes to study Nursing.
Long term funding has been put aside for the training in three years of a young boy in Morning Star called Ujjwal who is studying hard at school for a place at Medical College. He wishes to study to become a Dentist or orthopaedic Doctor (he’s got time to decide which profession to choose)
So thank you to so many people who have donated towards this year’s Lent Project.
With God's help I will be a good steward with the money donated to this project. Please hold it in your prayers and feel blessed that your gift will ensure this Lent project will make a difference to the Nursing Standards and Health Care of the people of Nepal.
Thank you all for your support in this ongoing project. The Diocese Lent appeal closes at Christmas but our funding for Nurses for Nepal will continue to keep open for any donations.
Namaste Wendy Bircham
