New Yarmouth project for older people
An exciting new project to benefit older people has just started in Great Yarmouth.
It came out of an idea from the local Older People’s Network to establish a directory of activities for older people in the Greater Yarmouth area. (The government defines older people as over 50!)
They formed a steering group to take the project forward and submitted a bid to the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund. The bid was successful and the project has
funding until March 2008.
There are two strands to the work. They are the publishing of the directory of existing activities and also to find out what other activities people are interested in participating in. The directory will be republished after 6 months to take on the
newly established activities.
Kate Platt has been appointed as the Development Coordinator for the project and will be contacting existing groups to get their details for the directory.
Kate will also be contacting individuals in a number of locations - outside local shops, in clubs, on the market - with a questionnaire to find out what activities they would want to do, if available. A letter in the Mercury from Kate has already
been produced responses from people wanting to know what goes on in their area as they feel they have no way of finding out at present.
The project provides an ideal opportunity for clubs and groups to advertise their activity, particularly if they want to increase their numbers. It will also be helping create new activity groups. The project is particularly aimed at the priority neighbourhoods but activities across the borough will be in the directory.
Kate is particularly keen to hear from people in South, Central and North Yarmouth, Cobholm, Claydon and St Andrews and Magdalen for both strands of the work.
Volunteers are needed for various aspects of the project – to run new groups, to develop a website and to help with data inputting.
