New Work in Yarmouth Port.

 DSCF0460
My name is Peter, and I am the Port Chaplain here in Great Yarmouth. I work with Industrial Mission and Mission to Seafarers. I am one of a number of Port Chaplain in the U.K. and worldwide.

My primary aim is to visit as many of the vessels that come into the port of Great Yarmouth and go on board a vessel to make contact with the seafarers. By going on board I am the only person who goes to see the crew who does not have any type of agenda. I am of course, as my title suggests, a chaplain to all, and so will take my faith with me, but I also have an eye out for the welfare of the crew.

If members of the crew wish to talk about their faith then I always invite the crew to talk about these issues off the vessel, normally over a cup of coffee/tea in a local café. I do also as requested take seafarers to church, as and when time allows.

The new item at present is the future of Great Yarmouth Port and the Outer Harbour. As far as I know I believe that work should begin in the not to distant future, this would then change the whole outlook of not only Great Yarmouth, but for the surrounding area of East Anglia.

Great Yarmouth has had a history of looking after Seafarers in the past, it is recorded that a Mission was set up here by the Mission to Seaman in 1857, and there has been some sort of centre round the harbour more or less ever since. I would like to think that with a new Outer Harbour we could end up with a new building for seafarers. In today’s world the seafarer wishes to contact home quickly, and so a building where they could come and relax and have the chance to email, telephone, and even exchange news and views from other.

I also speak about my work to any group and at times will take church services. If you would like to speak to me about any of these please call or email me.
