The Minster Planning for a Green Future
31st May 2023
Our Parish of Great Yarmouth is blessed with three diverse, inclusive, beautiful churches. St Mary’s and St Paul’s date from the nineteenth century. The Minster’s foundation stone was laid in 1101, the church having been at the heart of the town’s community life for over 900 years
It is time to review how our Minster contributes to the wider community. We need to prepare it to serve the needs of the town for the next hundred years. The church is not just a building. It sits in a glorious churchyard which is one of the largest green spaces in our town. It is evident that a clear vision, a steely determination and a clear plan for funding is needed to allow us to continue to serve the community for the next hundred years
A small group comprising Father Simon, Paul Davies, and Paul Spychal have been working with an incisive and constructive group ‘A Different View’ for several months to clarify our Vision and Aims for the future. Our plan is to submit a substantive Expression of Interest to the Heritage Lottery Fund very soon
Vision
An inspiring, reflective and joyous space for everyone, where lives are enriched and horizons widened
Aims
Powering the wider community. An innovative, green, original plan involving discreet ground source heating and discreet solar panels which will heat our church and provide energy to benefit the wider community
Sharing and creating together. Working with people constructively to benefit our wider community. Targeting the challenging and very real needs of our residents
Blurring our walls. Thinking of the inside space and outside space as one. There is an opportunity to use our outside space to benefit the community. This may involve seating with benches and tables, gardening opportunities for the community, play and pack away, a performance and meeting stone circle area, open spaces to benefit mental health and wellbeing with opportunities for work and volunteering
Watch this space! Paul Spychal
