Minster grade II listed wrought iron railings along Northgate Street

Paul Davies reports:

MINSTER IRON RAILINGS 06-2023

The decayed Minster grade II listed wrought iron railings along Northgate Street have been restored and painted in black with gold finials thanks to the Heritage Action Zone project (HAZ), who paid the entire cost. Great Yarmouth Borough Council, with Historic England and Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust, is delivering a £1.9m scheme putting heritage and the local community at the heart of revitalizing the town centre. The HAZ involves local people in repairing, conserving, and building a better understanding of the area's historic buildings and sites, supporting regeneration and recovery, conserving buildings at risk, creating new facilities and giving people new skills

Projects under the HAZ being undertaken are consolidation of the section of the medieval Town Wall alongside the Market Place, the restoration of the wrought iron railings at St. Nicholas Priory Primary School, repairs and improvements to historic buildings in Market Row, repair and reuse of 145 King Street and 6 Market Place, landscaping the Market Place, schemes for historic shopfront improvements and historic building repairs

The HAZ zone includes the Market Place including the Minster, the Rows and the northern end of King Street. Ground penetrating radar has already been carried out in the Minster churchyard and the Fishermen’s Hospital to investigate hidden structures
