Recital at Great Yarmouth Minster

Caroline Buddery's review of recital held on Wednesday 5th July by Adam Chillingworth

LUNCHTIME RECITALSPulling out all the Stops

I would like to thank Michael Nicholas for organizing the summer series of the Wednesday lunchtime recitals, which will continue until September. It was lovely for all to be together again following the winter hiatus

The series opened in a beguiling manner with an organ recital by Adam Chillingworth, who presented an esoteric choice of programme, bookended by compositions by J S Bach, the great musical genius of the late Baroque Period. The magnificent music was enhanced by the excellent acoustics of the Minster

The recital began with Bach’s Concerto in D minor, which is an organ version of a concerto for 2 violins and orchestra by Vivaldi. His unmistakable style was evident in the multi-layered work. I am sure that if Vivaldi had been looking down from Heaven he would have been delighted by the organist’s dexterity

Mendelssohn’s Sonata 111 in A major provided some contrast, for this begins in a very majestic manner followed by a colourful fugue and nuanced chorale with a rather tranquil conclusion. The recital culminated in Bach’s Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, perhaps Bach’s most important work which gave this talented organist the opportunity to reveal his mettle in a delicious and irresistible interpretation

All offered Adam Chillingworth very many thanks and wished him every success in his future career
