Great Yarmouth Arts Festival

GY ARTS FESTIVAL 2023

I am not a music reviewer this is just a few words to share with you some thoughts and to show appreciation of a wonderful concert. On Saturday 30 September, the final event of the GY Arts Festival - a concert was given by the East Norfolk Sinfonietta, conducted by Frankie Ayers who founded the ECS in 2016. This wonderful concert was a great delight for the large audience The GY Arts Festival concluded with this event, and what a celebration of great music it was

The first work, Tchaikovsky's romantic Romeo and Juliet Overture, in turn thunderingly dramatic and achingly beautiful, what a splendid choice of music this was, a promise of things to come

We were then treated to the world premiere of Joseph Knight's Euphonium Concerto No.1

The whole concerto was influenced by the end of Psalm 77 vv19 and 20. “Our path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though your footprints were not seen You led your people like a flock” , depicting man looking back on life, which gave the orchestra and soloist the chance to show their skills at creating many different colours

The superb soloist, the composer, and the excellent orchestra under the baton of the clear conducting of the conductor, gave the audience a fantastic performance of this work, and there was a well-deserved long ovation. The world premiere of Joseph Knights Euphonium Concerto No.1 with Joseph as the superb soloist. the rich tones of the euphonium resounded round the Minster, the orchestra (Leader Sarah Waller) responded well to their conductor's (Frankie Ayers) clear conducting. The audience gave the soloist another great well deserved ovation

After the interval, came Symphony No, 3 in C Minor 'Organ’. The symphony opened with a brief and rather haunting introduction, which led us into the 'motto theme'. This well-loved Symphony is always remembered by the final movement

The organ appeared in two of the movements. The final one which is well-loved and well-known did not disappoint us. The tremendous grandeur of the opening organ chord, led us in to the glory and majesty of orchestra and organ combined to fill Gt Yarmouth Minster with glorious sound, which will linger with us

Hugh Sturzaker MBE , Chairman of the GY Arts Festival thanked the ESC and their conductor, leader and Joseph Knight for a tremendous evening, and said how fortunate we are in having such musicians around us...the future of classical music is definitely safe in their hands
