A Prisoner of the Irrevocable Memories of War
Remembrance Day
A Prisoner of the Irrevocable Memories of War
After work we’d visit my grandfather
Who lay ill in a hospital ward.
Now a prisoner of his memories,
He had lived a long , courageous life
Surely this cannot hold my grandfather:
He’ll escape the winter of his life.
He refuses examination by a German doctor,
“I’ve shot too many like him”
Once I’m asleep, sighs my grandfather—
Ask the dead - It’s hard to climb back up.
Often I’m back in the trenches,
In the Ypres salient or at Passchendaele
Now you’re here, says my grandfather,
“It’s lovely to see you both”.
But visiting time goes too fast.
We drive home, clinging to wild hope, in the darkness
Father and grandfather, grandmother and grandfather
And the beauty of the waiting Spring.
He’s looking forward to the past,
His thoughts entwined in the palimpsest of time
