November brings around a season of Remembrance. On Remembrance Sunday itself (this year on 12th November) the local focus will be on the war memorial in St George’s Park in Great Yarmouth. There the borough ceremony will take place with local dignitaries and members of the armed forces (past and present) paying their respects to those who have given their lives for our country in war
But did you know there is also a war memorial in Gorleston?
Tucked away inside Gorleston Old Cemetery there is a war memorial to those who gave their lives in the two world wars from our town. Begun a few years ago by the Gorleston-on-Sea Heritage group (GOSH), who also write in this magazine, there is now an annual ceremony on 11th November at 10.55am
The ceremony, which will include the two-minute silence at 11am, has been growing in size in recent years. Last year it was attended by the Mayor and local borough councillors, members of the Royal British Legion, a detachment of the Combined Cadet Force from East Norfolk Sixth Form, pupils from Lynn Grove, Ormiston Venture, Peterhouse Church of England Primary, and Ormiston Herman academies, and members of the wider community. In all about 300 people gathered
This seems to me to be a significant event in the life of our town, and if you are available, can I invite to join this year? We will gather from 10.30am, with the ceremony beginning at 10.55am
