An important invitation
By Andy Moss, Leader of Kings Church in Gt Yarmouth
In 2005 we opened the doors of the purpose-built Kings Centre in the hope that the church would have a more positive influence on the borough. We see an average of 400 people per week respond to an invitation to visit the Kings Centre for all sorts of activities. These range from church activities to conferences, award evenings, training seminars, table tennis club, children’s parties etc. Our parent and toddler group and youth group are still growing as word of mouth goes out.
While our bookings have continued to increase we have noticed that some groups don’t always get the numbers they expect. Some groups cater for an expected number of people based upon the initial response to their invites but in reality see less attend. This has sometimes left the organisers feeling a bit discouraged. That’s really quite sad as we have been privileged to see just how hard people are working to improve the community they live in.
It is so much better when everyone attends who said they would. So, what’s your response to an invitation to be involved in your community or your church community? Do you say yes and then send your apologies later or is your Yes a Yes?
If you were God how would you feel if you sent your Son (Jesus) to save people from the penalty of their wrongdoing and to prepare a place in heaven for them and very few accepted the invitation? Would excuses such as “I’m too busy w ith my life, I‘ll think about it later” or “not that old fashioned church stuff” truly satisfy God?
Our experience is that Jesus has been shaping us as a church along with many others to be far more invitational. We can invite you to the Kings Centre or to our Sunday morning worship times but these are nothing compared to His ultimate invitation to the party of all parties (Heaven).
To our shame Christians often have poor excuses as to why we haven’t even given out such incredible invites. The greatest being “I fear what people will think of me.” Over the next few weeks we aim to make Jesus more attractive to you through some life situations and stories written by our group leaders.
