Port Chaplain for Gt Yarmouth is Ordained
The Town Hall entran ce and stairway was lined with young Sea Cadets all the way up to the Assembly Rooms. The atmosphere was welcoming and was filled with anticipation and joy, because today, Saturday the 9th June 2007, Peter Paine was Ordained as Port Chaplain for Great Yarmouth and will now be known as Rev Peter Paine.
The service commenced with a Sea Cadet piping call to announce the arrival of the VIP’s which included the Mayor of Great Yarmouth Councillor Paul Garrod, the Mayor's mother, also the Rev J Cruickshank, Rev Richard Lewis, Rev Canon K Peters, and the Rev Ian Bunce.
A welcome from the Sea Cadets
The Mayor spoke a few words of greeting and congratulated and thanke d Peter for the work that he has done for Great Yarmouth. He described Peter as a man of many hats and a man who is always ready to help. His hats include the Industrial Mission, Port Chaplain, Chaplain for the Sea Cadets, Webmaster for the new www.networkyarmouth.co.uk website, Chairman for the BWCF (Borough Wide Church Forum), Chairman for Great Yarmouth Churches Together and the Seafarers Mission which is very close to his heart. Peter’s heart is on fire to do the Lord’s work and to help people. Most of all the love for his Saviour is apparent to all who meet him.
The Rev Chris Warner Head of the Industrial Mission team said that the start of Peter’s ministry came about seven years ago when he wrote to him and suggested that he would be the ideal man to be the new Port Chaplain. Peter accepted the challenge and began a journey over a period of seven years studying and qualifying to fulfil the criteria. The Mayor congratulates Peter
The Rev Richard Lewis Regional Minister for the Eastern Baptist Association conducted the Ordination he spoke about the gifts that have been given to the church and his belief that Peter has been called to serve. He said, “We have prayerfully checked Peter’s ability to be recognised and his calling is now acknowledged publicly and he has made promises and committed himself as a disciple of Christ”. He quoted from the Bible reading that Peter’s wife had read Matthew 5:16 “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven”.

The Rev Ian Bunce, Head of Mission Department Baptist Union, brought greetings from 2100 Baptist Churches and he said that he had met Peter five years ago and he spoke of how he had to stand before the Baptist Church officials in Ipswich and be grilled to make sure that he was suitable for the work. Not only did he have to produce evidence of his work but the quality of his humour was assessed and his wife was also grilled. Happily, at the end of these meetings it was decided that Peter was indeed a man of God capable of Chaplaincy and together with the course that he had to complete is now totally recognised by the Baptist Church.

The Rev Bunce pointed out that something significant has happened beside the Rev Peter Paine’s name change! - the Historical signing of the 45 million project for Great Yarmouth Outer Harbour Port development which is soon to take place here in Nelson’s country. The Rev Bruce brought his short sermon to a close by saying, “You are called to be salt and light to make things happen and as the Rev Paine allows God to guide him people and organisations will benefit”.
The Rev Peter Paine spoke about his journey going back in time when he met the Rev Chris Warner on a cold January day at St Nicholas Church and how since then the friendship has grown. He went back even further to when he was a teenage boy in the Boy’s Brigade which was where his Christian journey began and has continued to grow during the time when he served in the airforce right up to now.
As Peter spoke ab out his wife, it was obvious to all how much he loves her and how she has given him support and love in every aspect of his life and work. Two of his three daughters were also present and he thanked them for their support and love and especially with regards to allowing him to win the fight to use the computer whenever he needed it! With much emotion and love Peter thanked Pat for always being behind him.

I myself would just like to say that the Sea Cadets were a credit to their leaders and deserve to be mentioned for their welcome and their impeccable manners and I am certain that all present would agree.
