South Asia Floods Crisis
Severe flooding in south Asia this summer has left hundreds of thousands of people homeless, and killed hundred. Typically, it is the poorest people who have been hit hardest.
An emergency situation is unfolding in the region. Through its on-the-ground partners, BMS World Mission is already responding. An initial grant for basic food supplies is helping 10,000 families in Bangladesh
The need for continued relief there, and in northern India and Nepal, will remain for some time. BMS is committed to helping partners provide essential aid in the weeks and months ahead. People affected by the floods in south Asia also need our prayers
Responsive prayer We pray, Lord, for the millions of ordinary people affected by the floods in northern India, Bangladesh and Nepal. The vast majority of these people are already from poor communities, and the events of this summer will make their situations even more difficult. May those who have lost family and friends to the disaster know your peace. May those who are unwell or injured know your healing.
May those who have lost their possessions and been forced from their homes know your provision. Lord, put our prosperity at the service of the poor We pray, Lord, for all those who are involved in the relief efforts in south Asia. We thank you for their willingness to help others, for their diligence and hard work, and for their selfless actions at this time of crisis. May you guide their plans and actions as they save people from the floods, distribute food, provide shelter and take care of the vulnerable. Lord, put our fullness at the service of the helpless We pray, Lord, for the governments of India, Bangladesh and Nepal as they deal with this time of crisis. May they make wise decisions over matters of aid, healthcare and housing. Pray for country leaders as they, over time, make flood prevention plans for the future – that they would not only make considerations for economic reasons but always keep in mind the poorest communities. Lord, put our energy at the service of the weak We pray, Lord, for BMS World Mission and its on-the-ground partners as they respond to another disaster unfolding in south Asia. We thank you for the way that BMS supporters in the UK give so generously to help relief efforts and pray that these gifts wo uld continue to be used responsibly and effectively to those in greatest needs. We pray for continued good relationships between BMS and its partners, and for the ongoing process of assessing the situation and responding accordingly with practical, financial and spiritual help. Lord, put our wealth at the service of the vulnerable We pray, Lord that we may all act as responsible stewards of your world in the truth that everything and everyone belongs to you. Help us to reduce the environmental damage to your world, with actions of integrity and courage. Lord of all creation Hear our prayer in Jesus’ name Amen
