Representatives of ADRA Peru were invited to attend a reception hosted by the British Embassy in Lima, Peru, on the occasion of the official visit of the Princess Royal on 7 July 2007. As part of a tour of South America Princess Anne, daughter of Queen Elizabeth II, spent four days in Peru visiting the President, gover nmental officials and development agencies.
The reception, held in the residence of the British Ambassador to Peru, was attended by an invited group of organisations involved in the development work supported by the British Government Department for International Development (DFID), including ADRA Peru.
For the past three years ADRA-UK has been supporting two projects in Peru co-funded by DFID. One is working to eradicate the problem of working children in the capital: promoting the importance of education, training parents in income generating skills to alleviate the economic demands to make children work, and encouraging schools to play a more active role in ensuring children stay in school. The other project, based in the highland region of Ayacucho, focuses on the rights of women and the reduction of family violence by raising awareness of people's rights, supporting human rights ombudsmen, and training the police and judiciary on recognising and prosecuting cases of violence against women and children.
Santos Guerrero Zarate, Operations director for ADRA Peru, attended the reception with Princess Anne, a nd had the opportunity to talk with the Princess about both projects. " The princess was interested in knowing about ADRA's work and for how long ADRA has been working for the most needed in Peru" said Mr Guerrero. From the UK Bert Smit, ADRA-UK Executive director, commented "the work we do around the world impacts countless individuals and communities. These people recognise our work on a daily basis. But it's also great when the work we do is recognised by high profile figures as well. It stands as a testament to our committed workers and our generous donors."
ADRA-UK's projects in Peru have been supported by funds raised during our Annual Appeal and through regular donations. For details of how you can support projects like these visit the ADRA website. .

During Spring of this year, over a period of two weeks, collections were made on behalf of ADRA in the Great Yarmouth Area. All donations were greatly appreciated. |
