Plea to help save 1000 beds from the dump

An urgent plea for help has gone out to save 1000 good quality beds from being dumped after the Y73465MCA Norfolk Furniture Project in Norwich was given a two-week deadline to vacate one of its warehouses.

The 1000 single and double beds, complete with mattresses, were donated to the project by Center Parcs at Elveden near Thetford.

YMCA Norfolk Head of Housing Services, Eddie Pleban, said they needed to find suitable warehouse space by September 13 or the entire store of beds may have to be simply dumped.

“This could turn into a real tragedy,” said Eddie. “We have beds for over 1000 people which we can find good homes for over the next eight months to a year. We desperately need to find someone who can store the furniture for us in one or several dry locations. They will fill a space of 8,500 square feet and no heating or windows are required.

“If we can’t find suitable storage in the next few days we will have to just send the beds for salvage which could even cost us money to get rid of them.”

Thanks to £25,000-worth of backing, and the support of local authorities and statutory agencies, the YMCA Norfolk Furniture Project was launched last July at a separate Project Warehouse off Hall Road in Norwich. This warehouse will continue as normal.

“The YMCA Norfolk Furniture Project was been set up to provide free-of-charge furniture and basic household equipment to those needy people in Norfolk who would otherwise not be able to afford it,” said Eddie, “ and we have been able to deliver to over 600 households in the last year.”
