Planet Pollution
By Maureen Homer
“He (Jesus) woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Peace. Be still.’ Then the wind ceased and there was dead calm.” – Mark 4:39
So who’s in control of our weather? We know that Jesus was able to control the weather when he lived on earth, but now we constantly see news reports of natural disasters and unusual weather co nditions attributed to global warming. Is our environment out of control?World-wide weather is certainly not under the control of mankind because we cannot produce floods or droughts, nor choose to have heat or cold. We can only re-act to what God sends. However, it has to be said that we must take responsibility for the way we treat our environment.
Can we say that God is no longer in control when we see the results of our constant pollution and mis-use of our planet? It is we who fill the air with greenhouse gases, decimate forests, farm too intensively, increase the deserts and produce more and more rubbish.
God, however, will only let us go so far because he loves and cares for us. An example of this can be seen when Moses battled with Pharaoh t o free the Israelites from slavery. When hail destroyed their crops, the wheat and spelt were not spoilt because they were late in coming up. In the same way we have seen some crops destroyed by floods this year but other crops, like apples, have increased because of the extra rain.
God can, and does, control nature.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help us to see your control in nature. Forgive us for our mis-use of natural resources especially in ___________________. Protect us from the harm that this causes. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
