Sunday 15th September

Heavenly Father, thank You for the church. Jesus said He would build His church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. It is not our job to build the church, Jesus told us to go and make disciples, not to build the church; that is His job
Jesus is the cornerstone, the foundation stone, which You laid in Jerusalem when Jesus was laid in the ground. Jesus is now the Living Stone, no longer dead and buried but alive and building His church
You tell us that when we become disciples we too become living stones being built by Jesus into a living church. The church is not the building it's the people!
Even when we go and make disciples, You go with us. It is by Your Holy Spirit that people come to know Jesus; it is not what I do but what You do that makes the difference
Forgive us for trying to build the church. Lord Jesus, You are the builder and it is Your church. We are cemented together by Your Spirit across nations and across cultures; the church's one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord... One Church, one Faith, one Lord
Those meeting in the largest cathedral, or the smallest church building, those meeting in homes, those meeting in secret, it is the people that matter to You; it is for the people that You gave Your life
Help me to make disciples, to live a life that invites people to meet with You. Let Your light shine so people want to ask "What is it that shines?"
Without You I can do nothing, but with You all things are possible. Shine Lord! Be bright! Thank You

Saturday 14th September

Heavenly Father, Jesus is the 'One-off'. There is no other man who is God and there is no other god who was man. There never can be and there never will be
Lord Jesus, you told us "Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming 'I am the Messiah', and will deceive many... At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Messiah!' or, 'There he is!' do not believe it. For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. See I have told you ahead of time"
When people lord it over others, we sometimes ask the question "Who made you God?"  The answer is no-one!  Forgive us Father that sometimes we try to make ourselves God, we try to take Your place in our own lives and even in the lives of others, but there is only one God, and only one person who is God, the One-off, Jesus
It is hard to believe that the religious leaders when You walked the earth, and eventually virtually all the people in Jerusalem, turned against You. The teaching and the miracles failed to convince. You said to the disciples "You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord', and rightly so, for that is what I am"
It took Your resurrection to finally convince, Your appearance in the upper room. You said to Thomas "Because you have seen me you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed"
Father, You told us to listen to Jesus. Holy Spirit, help me to hear Jesus. I believe and am blessed. Thank You

Friday 13th September

Heavenly Father, why is it that, if I knew there was a great offer at a store which I had checked out was genuine and I would happily tell all my friends and family about, I find I am often reluctant to tell people about the greatest offer that has ever been made to the human race? Forgiveness, peace of mind, security, purpose, a future, strength, joy, not to mention eternal life!
All on offer, at an amazing price. Incredibly, the price was paid by You! You walked with us, talked with us, healed us! In Your Word, You told us all about Your love for us. Jesus gave His life for us. We are redeemed by His sacrifice
Sometimes we see a token in a paper or magazine and we can present it in a store to receive a reduced price or even get something for free. You Word is full of tokens, tokens of Your love for us, and none more so than Jesus, Your Word made flesh. Your Word tells us, "Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost"
Father, help me to be ready to tell people about Your amazing offer, eternal but a 'one-off'. I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile (including me!).  For in the gospel the righteousness of God, Your righteousness, is revealed - a righteousness that is by faith from first to last. I bring my token, my life to You and I am redeemed. Such is Your love for us. Thank You

Thursday 12th September

Heavenly Father, thank You, our God of hope, thank You that You fill us with all joy and peace as we trust in You, as we trust in Jesus, so that we may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit
Father we live in difficult times; but then, when have we not lived in difficult times?
We live in a time of political division and tension, but then...
We live in a time when we wonder what the future holds, but then...
Lord Jesus, You lived in difficult times, a time of political division and tension, a time when people wondered what the future would hold. You knew that You were in a difficult time, the political and religious leaders of the day would send You to the cross and the people, the disciples included, wondered what the future would hold
Thank You that we now know what the future holds, despite difficult times, despite political upheaval, despite a world ravaged, in disarray, in turmoil
We do not put our trust in Churchianity - worshipping the church
Our faith is not in Religiosity - a religion
Our trust, our faith, our hope is not in any political or religious system; our trust, our faith, our hope is in One person, You, Jesus. It is because of You and what You have done that we can see beyond time
Even today You fill us with joy and peace as we trust in You. It may well be a peace that passes all understanding but we know the future is secure because we are in Your hands. Nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God that is in You, Christ Jesus our Lord

Wednesday 11th September

Heavenly Father, thank You that You are as good as Your Word. When Jesus said "I AM the Good Shepherd", He fulfilled Your promise that You would come Yourself to look after us. You gave us Your Word that You would do this and so You gave us Your Word
Jesus warned against the Sadducees and the Pharisees, saying that they did not practice what they preached. Jesus practiced exactly what He preached and did everything You said He would do:

He talked of Your love and He loved people;
He spoke of healing and brought healing;
He spoke of sacrifice and was sacrificed;
He spoke of resurrection and was resurrected;
He said He would send another comforter, the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit has come

Thank You that we can know everything we need to know about You in Jesus
Thank You that we can see everything we need to see through Jesus
Thank You that we can come to Your Word, the written Word, and find that everything it speaks of is fulfilled in Jesus, Your Word made flesh. Jesus fulfilled Your Word and made a New Testament
Thank You that I can fully trust Your Word, it is the Truth and it is the Way, and it is Life. No other god can do what You have done, giving Your life for us. Living and dying so we could know You and Your love for us
 Thank You that I now have Your Word in my heart, written there by Your hand. The Lord has promised good to me, His Word my hope secures, He will my shield and portion be as long as life endures
Thank You that I can completely trust Your Word. Amazing Grace

Tuesday 10th September

Heavenly Father, I just listened to Johnny Cash, and then Kris Kristofferson, singing the song "Why me Lord?" and find myself asking the same sort of question about me and my life: "Why me Lord, what have I ever done, to deserve even one of the blessings (pleasures) I've known?"
I realised almost immediately that the answer is nothing, I haven't done anything because it was while I was still far off that You came to find me. The Bible tells me "You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly... God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us"
I know this is the Truth. I know I was not searching for You, God, and certainly not looking for Jesus, when I found myself asking questions and finding them answered by You, in Your Word, through Jesus. It is by grace I have been saved, through faith, and this is not from myself, it is Your gift to me, so I cannot boast
Thank You for the many blessings You have given me
Thank You for the assurance You give every day of Your love
Thank You that each day Your glory is revealed in the world; all of creation declares Your glory
While I was so far away, thinking I was self-sufficient, You showed me how much I rely on You, You showed me how much You love me, how much You care for me. I would not be where I am today if it were not for You. I will never understand why You chose me, but I will be forever grateful that You did. Help me to tell others about Your great love for them

Monday 9th September

Heavenly Father, as I was walking last night I felt a real chill in the air for the first time this season, and a flock of geese flew overhead in the usual 'V' formation, honking as they headed south. I thought, "Winter is on the way" and stopped to wonder if I was being superstitious?
There are so many superstitions my mother often quoted:

no crossed knives
no shoes on the table
don't walk under a ladder
a broken mirror, 7 years bad luck
touch wood
never put an umbrella up indoors
black cats bring good luck
see a penny pick it up
cross your fingers

I've never subscribed to or believed any of them except one "Red sky at night, shepherds delight; red sky in the morning, shepherds warning"
Even before I knew Jesus, I believed the red sky because it seemed to be true, so perhaps it wasn't just superstition? Jesus seemed happy with it, when asked for a sign He told the scribes and Pharisees "When evening comes, you say 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red' and in the morning 'Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast'.  You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah"
Three days in the whale for Jonah, three days in the tomb for Jesus. Jonah back from the dead on the shore, Jesus back from the dead on the shore. Resurrection, a clear sign, Jesus is who He said He is. Help me to trust the sign from the time! Thank You
