Anniversary Concert at Stalham Church

ANNIVERSARY CONCERT 09-2019

Out of Egypt, a five-piece Christian band formed a year ago, is to play its first anniversary concert at Stalham Baptist Church on Saturday October 12. Tony Rothe, Network East Norfolk, reports

The band was formed to play at an event called “All About Gospel” back in October 2018. Its members then decided to continue together with the aim of raising funds for the church and other Christian charities and churches

Out of Egypt plays a broad range of Christian songs in a contemporary style. Their repertoire includes early spirituals and old time Gospel numbers, some that people might consider pop songs, and a growing collection of original songs written by band member Gary Cunningham

OUT OF EGYPTSince it formed, the band has played at the Norfolk Broads Filling StationSt Mary’s Church in Hickling, the Stalham Fringe Festival, performed at several school assemblies, and provided the music for a service at HMP Bure. There is now a demonstration CD available that is sent to those making booking enquiries and is sold at their concerts

David Osborne, coordinator of the Norfolk Broads Filling Station, the first organisation to book the band, said “Out of Egypt came strongly recommended to us after one of our number had seen them at Stalham. We are looking forward to them returning as they will appeal anyone who enjoys Gospel Music”

Appreciation of the band is growing, and its members have been invited to return to all the schools where they have already played, with additional schools scheduled for the coming autumn term. Sabrina Holmes, R.E and Collective Worship Lead Teacher for the Swallowtail Federation of Church Schools, said “We would really love for you to continue to come in to school, I was told that Hickling absolutely loved their session with you”

A return date in January is expected at the prison. Lebert Shakes, chaplain at HMP Bure, said of the band’s first visit “It was amazingly inspirational. The men are still singing your praises and saying how beautifully enjoyable and uplifting the service was for them”

Enquiries from a sheltered housing scheme on the Suffolk border are also expected to lead to further work and the possibility of playing at a mission week in Essex has been discussed

Diana Gordon, a deacon at the Stalham Baptist Church, organised the original event and sings in the band. Explaining how they decided on their name, she said “Whilst as Christians we have been taken out of our old life by the finished work of Jesus, we frequently persist in remaining in our old life, just as the Israelites led out of Egypt did”. She continued to describe how the band will frequently explain the Biblical context for their songs and the reason they were written. The band encourages those who book them to find people from their organisation to offer testimonies about how Christ impacts on their life today

The anniversary concert will feature a support act and will be an opportunity for any local church or charity thinking about organising a charity concert to see them in action and will be enjoyed by anyone wanting to hear gospel music

Doors open at Stalham Baptist Church at 7:00pm The concert starts at 7:30pm on Saturday October 12. There is no charge to attend but voluntary donations will be welcome
