Sunday 24th May

Heavenly Father, we are in deep trouble. The whole world has been hit, like a cricket ball hit by a bat, knocked for six. I know You know already; if You don't then there is something far more troubling, are You really God?
Of course You are, and in the midst of the 'cricket ball flying through the air', our world, Your world, spinning in space and time and hit for six, You are at work. For some reason, I don't know what or why, You have allowed this pandemic to strike and the blow has been devastating for so many across the world. We look to You, once again, to rescue us
We hear on the news of great progress being made in completing new roads and new rail networks, and people being encouraged to cycle on newly created cycle paths, and to walk on footpaths, but at the same time we are unable to visit loved ones and we hear daily the number of people who have lost their lives
I don't know for certain what You are doing at this time, but I do know it will be for good, because You are good, Your purposes are always good.  Perhaps You too are forging new links in the spiritual realm so more and more people are coming to You in prayer and meeting with Jesus
When St Paul was in lockdown, imprisoned, he did great things, meeting with You, singing praises and writing Epistles, and the disciple John, imprisoned on the Isle of Patmos met with Jesus and wrote the Revelation given to him
Father, I believe and trust You are still doing great things, but still ask You to bring the pandemic to an end. Thank You

Saturday 23rd May

Heavenly Father, I wonder if we all have a 'blind spot' when it comes to people we love?  Often, parents only see the good in their children or grandchildren...  Well, I can only speak for myself.  Although, perhaps, this is a characteristic of You, our Father, as Your Word tells us, "Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins".  Not quite a blind spot, but certainly what is there is not seen
You also tell us to remember this: "Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins".  Wow!  This seems like a description of Jesus in a nutshell!
Lord Jesus, You came to the earth and turned sinners from the error of their ways, and You have indeed saved us from death, giving us instead eternal life, and You have covered a multitude of sins for a multitude of people, including me!
So perhaps now we are all in the 'blind spot of God' where our sins are forgiven, covered by the blood of Jesus.  You will not always accuse, nor will You harbour Your anger forever; You do not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.  For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is Your love for those who fear You; as far as the east is from the west, so far have You removed our transgressions from us
Thank You for Your great mercy and Your promise, "If we walk in the Light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin".  Thank You

Friday 22nd May

Heavenly Father, I remember a regular feature in the comics I had when I was a child was 'Spot the Difference'; two pictures that at first glance looked the same but on further investigation revealed small changes that were not at first noticed: a plain tie in one was striped in the other, an earring in one but not the other, a four-legged animal was now perched on three, or a TV aerial had gone missing
I wondered what differences I would spot if I looked at the world before Jesus and after, BC - AD Spot the Difference.

BC: animal sacrifice, the scapegoat, guilt offerings;
AD: Jesus sacrifice, forgiveness, clean heart
BC: an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth;
AD: love your enemies, go the extra mile
BC: God in a cloud, a pillar of fire, in the temple, on a mountain, at a distance;
AD: Jesus on earth, on the cross, in the grave, alive again, God in us by His Spirit
BC: I pay for my sins, the wages of sin - death;
AD: sins are paid for by Jesus, the result- eternal life

BC: Law;
AD: Grace

Father, thank You that Your Spirit is in the world and in everyone who has put their trust in Jesus. Thank You that we are now different, I am not what I was. The fruit of Your Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and selfcontrol. May people spot the difference in me today and ask to taste and see that the Lord is good. Instead of slavery to sin, addiction, evil, selfishness, Jesus has brought freedom, faith, hope and love. I see the difference. Thank You for AD

Thursday 21st May

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your guidance to peace.  "Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!  Let your gentleness be evident to all.  The Lord is near.  Do not be anxious about anything but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus"
If I could understand the peace that passes all understanding it would not be that peace.  All I can do is accept it, give thanks for it and enjoy it!  I may not understand how that peace comes to me, but I can look at what You recommend.  "Rejoice in the Lord always!"
What do I often do instead?  Complain, whinge, worry?  OK, so I must stop that and rejoice...always
What else do I do?  Be gentle, be seen to be gentle
What am I often like instead?  Hard, harsh, angry, bitter?  OK, so I must stop that and be gentle, soften my voice, my attitude, my manner
You are near? Do I think of that?  No, I forget You are with me!  I must remember the Kingdom of God is near
Do I get anxious?  A bit?  A lot?  Yes!
Prayer and petition?  Petition, get lots of people to sign up?
Say Amen to prayers!  I ask You and say 'thank You' even before You answer?
I can trust You?  O K, I can do all this; I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me
Thank You for showing me the Way!  Focussing on whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent or praiseworthy!  And the God of peace guards my heart and mind

Wednesday 20th May

Heavenly Father, help me to persevere, not to give in, help me to keep going.  I know that it would be so easy to roll over, go back to sleep and not meet with You; but I also know that would be a slippery slope and that although I might get up tomorrow, eventually one day missed would stretch to two days, then three, then a week, and then I will have lost count of the days since we met
Thank You that our relationship grows as we meet, as I share my heart with You and as You share Your heart with me
Thank You that Your heart is in Your Word, that Jesus is Your heart
Thank You I can trust Your Word and that You mean every word You have spoken
Thank You that Your heart is love, Your very being is love expressed in Jesus, "This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased"
Thank You that You do not turn away, that You do not abandon us
Thank You that it is not possible for You to forget us.  "Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne?  Though she may forget, I will not forget you!  See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me"
Your promise to Israel is also Your promise to us.  Your arms are open wide, ready to embrace us.  You are a Father like no other.  Your love goes on forever.  You determined that Jesus would go to the cross, a ransom for many.  Jesus was determined to go to Jerusalem and fulfill Your plan.  Help me to be determined, give me 'stickability' so I keep going, keep meeting with You every day

Tuesday 19th May

Heavenly Father, thank You for the simplicity of the Gospel, "God so loved the world that He gave His One and Only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn it, but to save the world through Him"
There is One Name under Heaven by which we can be saved and that is Jesus. I cannot add anything to this simple Truth, nor can I take anything away from it, Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life
Thank You that I do not need a degree in theology, I do not have to sit exams; I do not have to prove my love for You to You. The only degree I need is that You transform me from one degree of glory to another. The only exam I need is that You examine my heart, You search my heart and lead me to the Way everlasting
I do not have to prove my love because You have already proved Your love by coming into the world, not to condemn it, but to save it, and that means I too am saved. I echo the words of King David, "One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple"
Thank You that You have made my body a temple; "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price"
Thank You that I do not rely on my goodness but on Yours, and that I do not need to build a temple, because already You have!

Monday 18th May

Heavenly Father, thank You that no matter what the situation, You are always there! I can always pick up the prayer-phone and speak to You, and You are never engaged, nor do You put me on hold
Even though life can sometimes be like a pressure cooker, You are always ready for me to let off steam. And You don't mind if I rant at You about the way things are because You want me to be open and honest with You about how I am feeling and the frustrations and disappointments I am facing
I know my problems, such as they are, matter to You, even though I might make comparisons, recognising that there are others who are in a far worse position than I am, You don't do that, because You love me and You care for me in the place I am today.  Even as I speak to You, the pressure releases and I can sing praises to You
Thank You that You can calm any storm, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual.  King David turned to You whenever  he was troubled.  "Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From the ends of the earth I call to You, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For You have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe".  His enemies were real, out to kill him!
Jesus told us about our enemy, "Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour".  You tell us to resist him by submitting to You, so I submit to You!  You proclaim release for captives!  You plant us as oaks of righteousness, for Your glory
