Saturday 10th April

Heavenly Father, thank You for the love You have for us

I was fortunate enough to have a loving earthly father who gave me gifts regularly. I remember when I was very young that every Friday there would be a stack of coins left on the mantelpiece by my Dad for me to collect, my pocket money. The amount grew as I got older

When I left home to study I remember regularly receiving envelopes through the post, with a card inside that simply said 'Dad' and some money. He was a great Dad

And You are a great Heavenly Dad! In Your great love for us You also give gifts, Spiritual gifts. St Paul tells us, "Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed... There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them... Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good"

You have gifts for every one of us, which You give for the benefit of everyone, and help to build Your church, Your Kingdom here on earth. Thank You for gifts of wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, and discernment

Lord Jesus thank You for the apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers You give to equip us for service so that Your body will be built up. Help us all to use our gifts wisely and to Your glory

Thank You for all those who have gifted, who loved me, taught me, guided me, supported me, and forgave my mistakes as I have walked with You. You are an incredibly generous, loving God
Amen

Friday 9th April

Heavenly Father, You must really love people, otherwise, why would You become one of us?

I am reminded of a line spoken by Humphrey Bogart in the film Casablanca, "Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine". Of all the planets of all the solar systems in all the universe, You walked upon ours

St John says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning". He continues talking about Jesus, "The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth". You came and lived among us

Speaking of John the Baptist, Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is the least in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he"

Speaking of Jesus, the Baptist said, "He must become greater; I must become less". Sometimes it seems that less is more? The Baptist willingly became less so Jesus could become more; am I willing to become less so Jesus can become more? Jesus, Himself, became less, "He made Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness"

Help me to clothe myself with Your compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Holy Spirit, guide my steps, my words and my actions today. Lord Jesus, less of me and more of You
Amen

Thursday 8th April

Heavenly Father, is it wrong to want some more? Is it wrong to want more of You that is? Is it wrong to come to You and ask for more of Your Spirit in my life, in my soul, in my heart? Can I come to You and ask to be so filled that my whole life is a constant state of prayer and praise, worship and adoration

In a scene from the musical "Oliver!" the young boy of that name, encouraged by others comes to Mr Bumble and asks for more gruel. This seems to have been unheard of! "Never before has a boy asked for more!" sings the imposing, god-like Mr Bumble. In the scene, written on the wall are the words, 'God is Love,' but it seems God is far away as the boys turn on Oliver when he runs away, terrified

I am sure You are not like this! You ARE a God of love and You love us to come to You, desiring more of Your love, more of Your Spirit, to be more like Jesus

St Paul tells us, "Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. And yet I will show you the most excellent Way". He explains that even if I speak like an angel, speak prophetic words, understand all mysteries, and know everything, have mountain moving faith and give all I have to the poor, if I do not have love, I gain nothing

He tells us "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs... It always protects, trusts, hopes and perseveres"

Do I want more? "Please God, yes, I want some more; more of You. More love"
Amen

Wednesday 7th April

Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus, Holy Spirit, God Almighty, One God in Three Persons; thank You for revealing Yourself to us in all Your glory

Lord Jesus, thank You for showing us the very nature of God in a form we could see and hear and understand; You lived and walked among us, the Son of God and the Son of Man; You gave Yourself up for us that we might be forgiven, one sacrifice for all, the price paid for sin, paid in full on the cross

Holy Spirit, thank You for affirming in our hearts the Truth about who Jesus was and is, the Son of God, One with You and the Father

Almighty God, Creator of Heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen, our Father, thank You for enabling us to know You, for adopting us into Your family as Your children; thank You for Your plan of Salvation, without which we would still be lost, in the dark, in the wilderness. When we were still far off You came to seek and save the lost

We love You because You first loved us

Thank You for building Your church, not with bricks but with living stones, us, human beings, with Christ as the cornerstone, the foundation. Help us to be a living organism that reaches out to a hurting world, just as Jesus did, not in our own strength, but empowered by Your Spirit

Where there is darkness may we bring light. Where there is despair may we bring hope. Where there is sorrow may we bring comfort and joy. Where there is anger, hatred and war, may we bring love and peace, the world around us transformed as You show Your love through us
Amen

Tuesday 6th April

Heavenly Father, thank You for these words, "The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes and I will continue to rejoice"

I thank You because I know sometimes it may appear that my prayers are quite frivolous, based on little sayings or humourous thoughts. And the way I talk to people in the street may be in a jokey kind of way, but the important thing is that Christ is preached, Jesus is made known and my love for Him and You is recognised as real and true

St Peter tells us, "In your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect"

Lord Jesus, I do revere You as Lord, as my Lord of lords and King of kings. Every time I meet with You, as I pray now, as I pray with others, as I pray alone, as I walk with You, I am listening and looking to learn from You so that I am always prepared to give an answer to anyone, at any time and in any place who asks me any question about You and why I believe in You; why I have put my trust in You

You said to St Peter, "I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in Heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in Heaven"

I believe You have also passed on keys to us and we have keys to unlock people's hearts so they can receive You as Lord too. Help me to open hearts today
Amen

Monday 5th April

Heavenly Father, thank You for a man called Luke, who wrote this, "I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning"

He "decided to write an orderly account" for a man he refers to as "most excellent Theophilus" so that he "may know the certainty" of the things he has been taught. In other words he wanted to get to the truth about Jesus and make sure that what Theophilus had heard was true

Like an investigative reporter today, he interviewed people who were there at the time and wrote down the facts. Luke is not listed in the disciples, he was not there with Jesus, but he obviously spoke to people who were, from Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, through to Cleopas, who met the resurrected Jesus on the road to Emmaus, and the disciples who ate fish with the risen Jesus on a beach and then saw Him ascend into Heaven

Luke writes again, "In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and teach until the day He was taken up to Heaven..." He then goes on to report things that happened with the disciples over a period of time. Guided by Your Holy Spirit, Luke tells it as it was, based on what he learned from those who were there. He does not say things like, "I guess what happened was..." or "I suppose what people said was..." He writes in factual terms and without explanation or interpretation

Father, thank You for this report from Luke, so like Theophilus, I too can "know the certainty" of what happened
Amen
