Sunday 15th May

Heavenly Father, yesterday, I prayed, "I know You do not solve every problem, things don't always work out the way we would hope..." I wonder if You know, or understand, how frustrating it is that You don't do as You are told??
So often when we pray, perhaps I should say, 'when I pray', the answer to the prayer seems so obvious! Heal the person, feed the person, show the person, stop the person, bless the person; their need seems so obvious, yet You do not do what I ask, or what I tell You to do
The problem with being me is... I am me. The problem You being You is... You are I AM, God... and I am not. It is so hard to understand why You do what You do, and even harder to understand why You don't do what You don't do! But, then, I don't understand half of the things I do, or don't do when I know I should!
The problem with You being You is that You let me be me! You want me to be me, to be free to make my own choices. Why? Because You love me. And because You love us all, every single person, You give us all freedom to choose; and that means You give Yourself freedom to choose too
As much as I wish You would do as I tell You, I think it probably is a good thing that You don't, simply because You are God and I am not
I also prayed yesterday, "...but You give us a Way to deal with everything". Thank You... for all that You do, all that You have done and all that You will do in the future
Thank You Jesus for submitting to Your Father's will. Help me, freely, to do the same

Saturday 14th May

Heavenly Father, thank You that we can bring anything and everything to You in prayer: our best and worst moments; our darkest and deepest fears; our darkest and deepest secrets!; our greatest successes and our biggest failures; our wildest hopes and dreams; and our smallest problems and worries. You care about every aspect of our lives
We sometimes hear said, 'A problem shared is a problem halved' but when we come to You, Your Spirit can do so much more. When we can't find the words to express ourselves You search our hearts and minds and speak on our behalf without words
The Bible reminds us, "The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us through wordless groans". Whatever we are facing we know we do not face it alone. Not only do You surround us with friends and family who care for us and love us but You, Yourself, care for us and love us
I know You do not solve every problem, things don't always work out the way we would hope, but You give us a Way to deal with everything. The Psalmist knew this! "The joy of the Lord is my strength! You are my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in You, and You help me... I was pushed back and about to fall, but the Lord helped me. The Lord is my strength and my defence; He has become my Salvation"
I do not rely on my own strength, I trust in You to hold me up. I trust in Your unfailing love. Holy Spirit, thank You for praying with me and for me

Friday 13th May

Heavenly Father, thank You for the technology that enables me to share-a-prayer with about a hundred people each morning and then the people they forward to that I know nothing about
I don't know how many actually read the prayer or follow its intended purpose, which is to encourage prayer, adapting, altering, agreeing, amending, or 'amening' what has been prayed, but what I do know is that in all the time I have been doing this You have never let me down!
Since the first day I shared a prayer, 28 July 2016, with eight people, the leadership at our church in Belton, right up until yesterday, You have turned up every day to guide my thoughts, my reading of scripture, my use of devotionals and songs to help me pray
When I walk with You round the village, or as I sit talking to people, You have spoken to me, often with a single word, like yesterday when the word 'gentle' crossed my mind and I felt that resonance that told me You wanted me to pray about being gentle
The technology may sometimes let me down, but even that is used by You to encourage me! Some people I don't often hear from contacted me recently to check I was OK because they hadn't received the prayer for a day or two; thank You for their concern and the assurance that the prayer I send is being read and prayed
I don't know what the future holds but what I do know is You are still God and Your love for us is real and unending. Thank You for Jesus and the gift of prayer and technology

Thursday 12th May

Heavenly Father, a speech often begins with the words, 'Ladies and Gentlemen' or, I suppose in some circles, 'My Lords, Ladies, and Gentlemen,' the word 'gentlemen' being used for all males present, but really gentle-men is a noun and adjective, describing men who are gentle. You call us to be gentle, You instruct us, "Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love"
Jesus described Himself in this way, indeed it is His Way: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I AM gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light". Lord Jesus, help me to learn to be gentle and humble, like You, so I find rest for my soul
The dictionary describes 'gentle' as "having or showing a mild, kind, or tender temperament or character". When Elijah was hiding in a cave, "A great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper". Your heart was not in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire; Your heart was in the 'gentle whisper'
Thank You for speaking to us in this Way, from Your heart a gentle whisper. Help me to have a mild, kind, tender temperament, to be a gentle man

Wednesday 11th May

Heavenly Father, thank You for the strength shown in Your Word. You are always straight with us, not mincing Your words, telling us the Truth, and doing so always for our benefit
Lord Jesus, You spoke openly and bluntly to a number of churches in Your Revelation to John. Thinking of what You said to the church at Ephesus, I wonder if this applies to some today, churches, individuals, me? "I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary"
Have we lived up to this? Have I? Have I worked hard and persevered? Have I endured hardships? Or have I grown weary? It would be wonderful if we had done so well; if I had!
But this is like one of those 'good news-bad news' tales; and that was the good news! The 'bad news' is, "Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first"
Father, have I lost my first love, the love I had at first? Have I fallen so far? Has the fire I had in me grown dim? Is my passion a thing of the past? I do not want this to be so! I know Your love never fades, never grows dim; but perhaps my love for You does, has?
Father, fan into a flame the dying embers so that I will love You as I did at first. Help my love to grow stronger, to blaze, and never stop

Tuesday 10th May

Heavenly Father, I was reminded today that what I say in prayer, public prayer that is, matters enormously. One of the Proverbs in Your Word tells us, "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit"
This tells me that when I say good things that encourage people and build them up then the fruit is life giving; but on the other hand when I say things that are negative and tear people down they can bring death or destruction. This is an enormous responsibility
St Paul writes, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen"
Father, I want to be an encouragement to others, in what I say, what I pray, what I do, how I live. I must always remember that anything I say applies to me before it applies to anyone else!
Jesus said, "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye' when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye"
Jesus also said, "Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven"
Father, forgive me if, when, I am judgemental. Help me to speak only that which encourages others as You encourage me

Monday 9th May

Heavenly Father, thank You for Sunday worship, for the prayers that are offered, the songs and hymns that we sing, the Psalms and the Scriptures that are read and proclaimed, and the sermons that are preached reminding us of Your love and Your sacrifice on our behalf
It is so good to come into Your presence and worship, but today is not Sunday, another Sunday is still a number of days away, before we will meet again as a church
Thank You that we do not have to wait until Sunday to come into Your presence! It is true that making the effort to get to church is a sacrifice, it is not always easy, after all there are many other things we could be doing with the time and many reasons to not attend: bad news, good news, exhaustion, suffering, a late night, a sleepless night, an early morning, preparation for the rest of the day, Sunday dinner, meeting people, some we don't like, some we don't know! There are many reasons to stay away!
But worship is not about Sunday, it is about every day! You tell us, "Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God - this is your true and proper worship". Every day it is right to worship
Everything in the world wants to keep me away from You, every day, not just Sunday. Your Word continues, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind"
Father, renew my mind so that every day I offer You my body, not just on Sunday
