Sunday 26th June
Heavenly Father, every day when we go out from our homes we arrive eventually at a junction or a crossroads where we have to make a decision, which way do I turn? Which way do I go?
But, it is not only in our footsteps that this happens but in all our decision making, the choices we make, every moral choice, how to respond, how to react. We have to make decisions daily, some are more significant than others, and some are life changing decisions
In Your great love for us You lead us to 'The Cross Road,' a road that leads to the cross, that leads to a sacrifice and a life changing decision, an eternity changing decision. As the pain and purpose of the cross is revealed there is decision we have to make: do I accept what is on offer? Do I turn away and carry on as before, making all my own decisions or do I accept Jesus as my Lord and Saviour, going His Way and allowing Him to guide my steps and my decisions
Coming in the flesh took You on 'The Cross Road' to Calvary. Not everyone wanted Your Way, in fact many despised Your goodness and Your Way of dealing with things. "Love your enemies... Think more of others than yourself...". To many "The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God"
What does Your death on the Cross offer? Forgiveness, healing, peace, restoration, a new Way to live empowered by Your Spirit, eternal life. Which way do I go? My way or Your Way?
I choose Your Way again today

Heavenly Father, sometimes we just need someone to visit us, it could be just anyone, but sometimes only one person will do. Thank You for times when I have been that person visiting, and thank You for the times when someone has come to see me
Thank You for the times I have been able to witness a surprise visit, perhaps at a party or in a hospital. The surprise (shock?) on the face is a beautiful thing to see, often a mixture of wide eyes, tears, and smiles. Disbelief is such a joyous thing; unbelief not so
Lord Jesus, when You appeared after You were crucified, dead and buried, You were met, not unsurprisingly, with disbelief by the disciples; what they saw was so unexpected, a resurrected Messiah! But once they got over the shock we are told, "The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord"
Thomas was not there, and when he was told what had happened he met it with unbelief, "Unless I see the nail marks in His hands and put my hand into His side, I will not believe." There are many 'unless I see' people, but when they see, unbelief turns to disbelief which turns to 'overjoyed' and "My Lord and my God!"
Jesus said, "Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing so some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it"
Lord Jesus, may You make many unexpected appearances today, in unexpected places, turning unbelief into disbelief and then joy. It is an absolute joy to behold such joy. Often, only Your visit will do. Thank You

Friday 24th June
Heavenly Father, when days are tough, and I mean very tough, where do I turn? Who do I turn to? Where can I find strength to carry on when I am struggling to see any way forward, wondering if I will make it through to the next day believing there is a God who loves me? Questioning if You really are there, and if You are there why are You letting this happen to me, to the ones I love? And then, from nowhere it seems, comes a song, one I have never heard before!
Talking of characters in the Bible who had confidence because of You! Men like Daniel, Moses, and David, who trusted You when faced with tough times, and I mean very tough! One in a den of hungry lions; one faced with the Red Sea in front and Pharoah's army behind; one pursued by an insanely jealous king intent on murder
These men trusted You with their lives, and You brought them through. And then I read the verse for the day in my devotional, "For the Lord is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues throughout all generations". It is almost like You know! Like You know there are tough days, very tough days, and You want to let us know that You are right there with us; with all of us
Is this simply coincidence? Well if it is then thank You for coincidences! And then another song turns up, another I had never heard, "Help is on the way". I have to smile. I can almost hear You talking to one another, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, "Do You think We are getting through?" Thank You Lord, You ARE getting through!

Thursday 23rd June
Heavenly Father, I love Your Word, but I am not a great fan of liturgy as I think of it rather like visiting my dad and having a script that we are going to read. I suppose that many visits and conversations would, however, have a similar structure of greetings, asking how we are, what we have been doing, and what are our plans; a kind of liturgy
Certain phrases do stick in my mind from the liturgy, like the 'Prayer of Humble Access': "We do not presume to come to this, Your table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in Your abundant and great mercies". In other words, it's not about my goodness, but Yours
Every time I come to ask You for something, anything, I don't expect You to answer and provide because I am worthy but because You are a good Father and Your love is deeper than I can ever imagine. I remember my earthly Dad providing so much for me when I was younger, including my first French horn when I went to college
You too provide so much for me every day. So, when I come to You today to pray for someone in terrible pain, I come asking, not trusting in my own goodness, but in the goodness of Your Son, and in Your Father heart, Your lovingkindness, and Your infinite mercy
You are a good, good Father, yes You are! There can be no denying it; You are perfect in all of Your Ways. Thank You for medication that brings pain relief, but a Word or touch from You can mean so much more and make so much more difference. Thank You that I have Your Word

Wednesday 22nd June
Heavenly Father, I wonder if the value of anything I do is measured in glory? Is there a sort of 'gloryomitor'? I see an arrow pointing straight upwards on the 'gloryomitor' and on the left is written 'Me' and a scale of 1 to 10; on the right is written 'You' and a scale of 1 to infinity
If I do an incredibly kind, good thing, is its worth measured in glory? I think that if I do this thing and the glory goes to me then I have had my reward and it ends here. However if I do something and the glory goes to You then it is of infinite worth. How can I make sure that the things I say or do give glory to You?
Jesus said, "Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do you will have no reward from your Father in Heaven". So, it seems a good idea to keep my good deeds secret. Jesus continues, "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honoured by others, Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full"
So here the 'gloryomitor' swings left, to 'Me,' and it is done with. If only You know it swings to the right and the glory goes to You, and my reward is in Heaven
Jesus concludes, "When you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you"
Lord Jesus, may everything else today be between just me, You and the Father. Schtum!

Heavenly Father, at the Academy Awards in the USA, the Oscars, or the BAFTAs in the UK, or at the Sports Personality of the Year, recognition is given to those who have been chosen as the best actor, actress, or sportsman or woman for that year. I always find it rather disappointing at the Oscars, or the other presentations, when the star can't make it because they are busy elsewhere
Someone else receiving the award on their behalf always seems to be a bit of an anticlimax to me. You, however, always turn up! You are worthy of our recognition because You are the only True God and worthy of all our worship, honour and praise every day; and You always turn up!
Does this mean that in some way You crave adulation? Are You so needy that You have to be praised so You can wallow in self-satisfaction? Nothing could be further from the Truth! It is we who need You!
We need to express our adoration in praise and worship because it is the right thing to do, because You are entirely and completely worthy. You are Creator of everything seen and unseen. You put breath into our bodies and everything is sustained by You, by Jesus. "The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful Word"
You speak and things happen! Now that is awesome power and worthy of praise. Thank You for loving us so much that Your Word became flesh, Jesus, who died for our sins. Worthy of our praise? Definitely! Undoubtedly! Absolutely!!

Monday 20th June
Heavenly Father, thank You for old hymns, old songs of praise and worship, and new hymns, and new songs of praise and worship
The Psalmist tells us, "Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, praise His name; proclaim His salvation day after day. Declare His glory among the nations, His marvellous deeds among all peoples". I am sure this Psalm was in essence a new song on the day it was written and other composers following have written new tunes
Singing is a great way to express our praise and worship, lifting our voices up to You in unison, or perhaps in harmony, telling of Your love for us, Your awesome power, Your lovingkindness, Your sacrifice, Your salvation, and so much more
Occasionally I like to compose new songs, but perhaps it may be good also to go back to old songs or hymns and write new tunes; I know there are many tunes based on Psalm 23, "The Lord is my shepherd"
I am quite sure You love to hear Your Word used in new songs, and to hear Jesus' name praised and worshipped with new melodies. What a gift You gave us when You created music!
Thank You for the way melody and harmony work, for the way pulse and rhythm work, the way verses, choruses and bridges work to build the structure of the song
Thank You for metre and rhyme to help songs to flow
Thank You that we can forget all this and simply sing, focused on You and Jesus, singing to You in the power of the Spirit
