Sunday 28th June

Heavenly Father, among a number of things I know, one of the things I know for certain is, You are good!

From the beginning, everything you created, the heavens and the earth, the oceans and the land, plants and trees, all was good. You set the sun and the moon in place and You "also made the stars".  And it was good.  You made the creatures of the sea and the birds of the air, the wild animals, and the livestock of the land and it was all good.  And then You made us, mankind, in Your own image. You looked at everything You had made and "it was very good"

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures for ever.  Everything You did was good, You are good, and You are always, ALWAYS(!) working for good.  Good is what You are and good is what You do.  "We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose"

Sometimes, when life gives us a slap in the face we may not be able to see any good in it, but You will be doing good somewhere, for someone, in some way; Your Way.  I cannot fathom the mystery of Your Way, but I know it is good.  As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are Your ways higher than my ways and Your thoughts higher than my thoughts.  "Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; His greatness no one can fathom; The Lord is righteous in all His ways and faithful in all He does"

Lord Jesus, You have shown us the Father and the Father's love.  Everything You did was good; I know You are still doing good by Your Spirit
Amen

Saturday 27th June

Heavenly Father, I asked You a question when I was out walking yesterday, "I was just wondering if You know how hard it is down here?"  And I immediately answered the question myself, as I realised, "Of course You do!"

One of the most amazing things about You is that You are not a God who is distant, up in Heaven, far away from life's problems.  You are a God who has been here, on earth, living life as we live it, but living life perfectly, different to any other human being.  You ate and breathed and grew, sweated, felt love for people, felt pain.  When You were slapped it hurt You as much as anyone.  When You saw people in trouble You wanted to help, like a father would want to help his children; Lord Jesus, You had all the characteristics of the Father and brought healing to people wherever You went

As for knowing how hard life is, You were a refugee in Egypt when You were just a child; had to learn obedience to Your parents; worked as a carpenter for most of Your life; and then had people turn against You when all You were doing was speaking Truth about life, about life's problems, about sin, and about our relationship with God.  Do You know how hard life is? You know!

You know about betrayal, about being deserted by Your friends, about being falsely accused, lied about, and taken for trial when You had done no wrong.  You know about torture, lashed within an inch of Your life and then "hung out to dry" by the people You came to rescue.  Hung on a cross, alone.   You know how hard life can be.  Sorry
Amen

Friday 26th June

Heavenly Father, sometimes we are going along quite happily, day after day passing uneventfully when life slaps us in the face

I know Jesus said, "Do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also", but this is life that gives a slap, or at least so it seems.  Jesus went on to say, "And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well".

Sometimes it feels like we have given all we can and then life asks more of us, and all we can do is give more.  Sometimes we have been on a long journey, a five year journey; a marathon!  And then life asks us to go an extra mile.  Jesus continued, "If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles"

Life sometimes asks a lot of us, but it should come as no surprise, as Jesus had also warned us, "In this world you will have trouble".  Life will slap us in the face, it is not a matter of if, but when.  So, what can we do?

I am not an Aston Villa supporter, but I like their club motto, written on their badge, "prepared".  I was never a boy scout, but I like their motto, "Be prepared"

I don't speak Latin, but I like my home city Sunderland's motto, "Nil desperandum Auspice Deo", which translates "Do not despair, have faith in God"

Your prophet Isaiah tells us, "Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint".  My hope and strength is in You: prepared for life.  Thank You
Amen

Thursday 25th June

Heavenly Father, I am not a great man of God but You are a great God of man, the only God, Creator of all that is seen and unseen, maker of heaven and earth, of men and of angels

And there is only one great Son of man who is the Son of God, Jesus, Your only begotten Son

No one has ever seen You, Father, but the One and only Son, Jesus, who is Himself God and is in closest relationship with You, the Father, He has made You known to us

I am nothing on my own but with You I am more than a conqueror

I have no wisdom of my own but that which You have revealed to me through Your written Word

I have no great understanding of my own, only that which is revealed to me by Your Son and affirmed by Your Holy Spirit; I am not the greatest student, but I have the greatest teacher

Nothing I do saves me, for it is by grace I have been saved, through faith - and this is not from myself, it is a gift from You - not by works, so I cannot boast.  We are Your handiwork, Your masterpiece, created in Christ to do good works, which You prepared in advance for us to do

I have no strength of my own to do these good works, but I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me

On my own I can accomplish nothing, I am simply a branch, Jesus is the Vine and You are the Gardener. Jesus said, "I AM the Vine; you are the branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing"

Help me to rely on You entirely to bear fruit and may this glorify You and the Father. Thank You
Amen

Wednesday 24th June

Heavenly Father, while it is good to hear the news that the lockdown is being eased and that from July 4th I will no longer need to remain 2 metres away from my wife, it is also quite scary; I don't mean being close to my wife is scary (!!) but that we are aware that the virus, Covid-19, has not gone away and there are some who say that a second spike may happen, even that it is inevitable.  I wonder if thinking this is ‘quite scary’ shows a lack of trust in You?

But then I am forced to ask myself if those who are followers of Jesus in countries where persecution is so virulent that they meet secretly, even keeping their faith hidden from their families, do they in some way demonstrate a lack of faith?  I come to the conclusion that their faith is real, and they risk their lives every day in even daring to say the name of Jesus

They are wise to remain hidden.  Jesus hid Himself from His persecutors until the time was right for Him to give Himself up to His accusers, those who would crucify Him.  Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, but sometimes perhaps You tell us to listen to Your warning and hide

Father, I do not know what the future holds, but You do.  Guide my steps so that all I think, say and do is honouring to You, but is also sensible.  Common sense?  Dying for You may very occasionally be required, but most of the time You ask us to live for You, to be a ‘living sacrifice’.  I prove nothing by being careless, but by being careful I may prove Your love to be real and save lives!  Thank You
Amen

Tuesday 23rd June

Heavenly Father, we have many strange expressions, things we say that are unrelated to what we are doing or about to do, yet most people would know what we mean: at the drop of a hat... fit as a fiddle... keep your eyes peeled... once in a blue moon... jump on the bandwagon

At the drop of a hat the disciples left their boats when they heard the voice of Jesus.  There were no hats!  But we know what we mean: immediately

How can a violin be 'fit'? And how are we like a violin? I have seen some violins in a very sad state of repair in my time. No strings, broken bridge, peg holes with no pegs, cracked body. Yet when we set about restoring the instrument, even though it may take some time, many a good tune is played on an old fiddle

Sometimes I have to face the music.  Sometimes I might hear something which is music to my ears.  At times I may be as bold as brass and at others I may need to march to the beat of a different drum.  None of this is really happening yet it makes perfect sense

No matter how old we are we can still serve the Lord, speaking and delivering a good message.  Sometimes I have to own up, admit my mistake and take the consequences.  Sometimes I hear good news: "Your sins are forgiven".  There are times I need to speak out, despite opposition, and at times I may need to follow Your Way, even though the world goes a different way

Holy Spirit, help me to stay alert.  Help me to be ready for the occasional opportunity to share my faith.  Help me to follow Jesus, not the crowd.  Thank You
Amen

song for today:
These Are The Days Of Elijah performed by Robin Mark

Monday 22nd June

Heavenly Father, King David wrote, "One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple"

In another Psalm he wrote, "Teach me your Way, Lord that I may rely on Your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear Your Name. I will praise You, Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify Your Name forever. For great is Your love toward me; You have delivered me from the depths, from the realm of the dead"

Father, help me to make these words my own. If my heart is divided, forgive me and change my heart; fulfil Your promise: "I will give them an undivided heart and put a new Spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh".  To bring an end to the war that is within me, between my mind, my heart, my soul and Your Spirit, I need to surrender

Lord Jesus, at Your birth angels declared, "Glory to God in the highest Heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom His favour rests".  You came that there would be peace between us and Your Father.  So I offer and accept the one thing that brings peace, I surrender to You.  I ask for an undivided heart

This is a joyful time, when the war is over, the peace treaty is signed.  I know I can trust You because You are faithful and You keep Your Word.  I can join with the angels, "Glory to God in the highest Heaven!".  Enemy snipers may come, but Your shield protects me.  Peace.  Thank You
Amen

Thank you Derek - we have to abide in the 'secret place' lockdown or no lockdown. It's our place of power and protection. We may even find others who share the secret..

Yes He is Good. He is righteous. He is Holy. He is Judge. He is merciful. He is faithful.
