Sunday 12th July

Heavenly Father, statistics show that over a quarter of criminals who offend, reoffend and end up back in prison

Lord Jesus, when a woman caught in adultery was brought before You by the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees, saying she should be stoned, You asked that anyone who was without sin should cast the first stone.  No one did, and they dispersed, leaving You with the woman.  You did not condemn her and told her to "Go and sin no more", to leave her life of sin

Lord, You came to set us free!  Your Word tells us, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.  Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery".  After being released, set free, I have to walk out of the prison and decide what I want to do with the rest of my life

Jesus says I must leave my life of sin, so I must decide on a new path, a new course of action.  How do I know what to do?  My old ways put me into bondage, so I must not tread the same path.  St Paul said, "One thing I do: forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus".  I need a new way!  Not looking back, I must follow Your Way

Your Spirit alive in me leads me on a new path, Your Word a lamp for my feet.  Whether I turn to the right or to the left, my ears will hear a voice behind me saying, "This is the Way; walk in it".  I put myself in Your hands for safe keeping.  Thank You, Jesus, for saving me.  Help me to not reoffend
Amen

Saturday 11th July

Heavenly Father, how times change!  It seems like only yesterday that I used to get on my bike to ride to the nearest library to change the books I had borrowed, or sit and read through pages of information as I studied, looking for some evidence to support what I was writing in a dissertation

Today I simply pick up my phone, tap in a few letters and the book comes to me, through the post or on the screen in front of me.  When enquiring about a piece of music on my phone I find all I need to know and much more besides; not only who composed the piece and when but the circumstances in which it was composed, an analysis of the structure, the full score and a even a video performance by famous musicians.  My Bible, my concordance, thick, heavy books, are also at my fingertips on my phone, as are more devotionals than I can ever get to grips with

Years ago I learned the acronym GIGO, Garbage In Garbage Out! Whatever I find on a computer, which is what my phone is these days, is only as good as the information that was put in by whoever created the webpage in the first place! Not everything I read on the internet is accurate!

So, who or what do I trust?  I need to be discerning, I need to check the facts; in that sense books and the internet are the same!  You tell us, "every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses".  You also tell us, "Test everything".  (Both out of context but still good advice!)  The Truth does not change; Your Word stands forever. I can, and will, trust You
Amen

Friday 10th July

Heavenly Father, thank You for smiles!  As I sit here sharing time with You this morning I find myself smiling

You have given us a great gift, a wonderful gift, we get to choose!  In every situation we can choose what we will do because part of the fruit of the Spirit is self-control; so do I choose to frown or smile?  Shrink or grow?  Bless or curse?   Live or die?  It may not always be easy but You have given us the choice, even telling us, "See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction... This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses.  Now choose life..."

When I am offended, I get to choose, do I snarl and take offence or do I smile and forgive?  You tell us, "A person's wisdom yields patience; it is to one's glory to overlook an offence"

Charlie Chaplin wrote, "Smile though your heart is aching, smile even though it's breaking. When there are clouds in the sky you'll get by if you just smile..."  I was wondering, asking You, how does the enemy react if I smile?  When I submit to You and resist the devil he must flee; spiritual warfare!  Here on earth, You tell us, "If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you"

I can smile, because I have Your Spirit alive in me.  I can smile because I have something my enemy does not and because they have nothing that I want.  Thank You
Amen

Thursday 9th July

Heavenly Father, it is quite amazing how we can be transported back in time (in our imagination I think I should point out) by something we see or hear

Seeing a very early episode of 'The Adventures of Robin Hood' starring Richard Greene, a couple of days ago, took me right back to my childhood. I would have been only 5 years old I guess as the series ran from 1955 - 1959. I loved the opening sequence with the swish of the arrow flying through the air, and the closing song, "Robin Hood, Robin Hood riding through the glen; Robin Hood, Robin Hood, with his band of men. Feared by the bad, loved by the good: Robin Hood, Robin Hood"

What a transport of delight for me, especially as in the episode Robin met Friar Tuck for the first time and asked him to come to the forest to "share Mass with the men".  An early introduction to You, my Father in Heaven?  I wonder?

In my journey back in time I also found myself singing one of the first hymns I loved, "When a knight won his spurs in the stories of old".  You tell us, "Start children off on the Way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it".  Seeing, and hearing, evil overcome by good regularly in my childhood must have helped to shape my thinking!  Thank You

So perhaps, even before I knew it, faith became my shield and joy my steed, against the dragons of anger, the ogres of greed.  Help me today to set free from the castle of darkness  the power of the Truth, by Your Word, the Sword of the Spirit.  Lord Jesus, thank You for memories
Amen

Wednesday 8th July

Heavenly Father, we often hear people use various phrases about 'home'. "Home is where the heart is".  "Home, sweet home".  "There's no place like home". Very often this is true, home is the place we long to be, a place of sanctuary, joy, peace, safety; a place where we love and are loved

I know sometimes, sadly, tragically, this is not the case; for some home is a place of fear, of terror, torture, abuse. I have never known a home like this, but I know people who have. I think we all know that life, home, is not meant to be like this; home should be where our heart is happiest, at rest, peaceful; home should be sweet; there should be no place better than home

Thank You that You have chosen to make Your home in our hearts, so that no matter where we go, no matter what we are doing, no matter what the challenges of the day, You are with us

Jesus said, "Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them".  What a promise!

"The Name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe".  You have rescued us, we have run to You and now we are safe. Your Spirit is alive in us; You and Your Father have made Your home with us. You have also prepared a place for us in Heaven

Jesus said, "My Father's house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?" There really is no place like home, home for us is a Heavenly Resident, You, here, even today.  Thank You
Amen

Tuesday 7th July

Heavenly Father, The enemy does not give in easily; I doubt he ever gives up

I remember a story told of a young priest who went to a retired vicar as he was troubled by fleshly, carnal thoughts. He asked the retired vicar when these thoughts would stop, to which the more experienced vicar replied, "I don't know, why are you asking me? I'm only 94!"

Father, strengthen me to win every battle as the enemy is relentless, ruthless and truthless. He always lies. The Israelites did not enter the Promised Land without a fight and so it is with us today; You have promised victory over sin and death, but that does not mean there will not be a struggle as the enemy does not give up trying to steal our peace

St Paul wrote to Timothy, "Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses"

Let me get a grip on reality, the Truth! The devil is a defeated foe, death has lost its sting. "Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of the sin is the law.  But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ"

Thank You Father that little by little You are transforming me by the renewing of my mind, just as in a physical battle where little by little the ground is taken. As You increase the love in my heart, so You give more power to my life. Father, I give myself to You again. Thank You
Amen

Monday 6th July

Heavenly Father, the Psalmists gave us these instructions: "Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His Name; worship the Lord in the splendour of His holiness...tremble before Him all the earth... Worship the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs"

And Jesus said, "It is written: 'Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only' ".  And He told us the greatest commandment, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength".  And Jesus also explained, "God is Spirit, and His worshippers must worship in Spirit and in Truth"

Father, thank You that You have shown us how to do all this: the Way

Father, thank You that You removed all doubt about who You are and what You require of us: the Truth

And Father, thank You that in doing these things we receive from You what Jesus came to give us:  the Life; Life in all fullness, even Eternal Life

Lord Jesus, I know I cannot do this in my own strength, but You have sent Your Holy Spirit, who strengthens me and enables me to worship in Spirit and Truth.  I was blind, I could not see You, could not understand how Your death and resurrection could mean anything to me today, but Your Spirit opened my eyes so I could see and opened my mind so I could understand.

I come before You to worship, the One True God, with gladness and joyful songs.  I love You my Lord and my God with my heart, my mind, my soul and my strength: help me to give all of this to You, by Your Spirit.  Awesome God.  Thank You
Amen

we cannot change ourselves. We need divine help to set us free. Crimals usually are in bondage from satan controlling them through sin.
