Sunday 21st February
Heavenly Father, I find myself thinking back to yesterday and magnetism, asking myself, "Do I believe in things I can't see?" The answer is most definitely "Yes!"
I cannot see magnetism but I see the effect it has
I believe in the wind blowing; I can't see it but I can hear it and see the effect it has
I cannot see love but I see the effect it has on people
I cannot see my heart, not the flesh version that pumps blood around my body, but the heart where my feelings dwell and I can see the effect of what comes out of the heart
I cannot see my soul but I believe I have one
I cannot see peace but I can see the effect it has on people as they love and live in harmony
I can't see my mind, but it is constantly thinking and prompts action
I cannot see Your Holy Spirit but I see the effect He has on people
I cannot see You, my God, my Heavenly Father, but "since the creation of the world Your invisible qualities - Your eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse"
In some ways I think the invisible things are the most important, and the most powerful. Jesus said, "Out of the heart come evil thoughts - murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander". Powerful, destructive emotions I cannot see, but actions I can see
I cannot see inspiration but I know I can be inspired. "A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart". Inspire me Lord! Fill my heart with good things
song for today:
O my soul arise and bless your Maker

Heavenly Father, we sometimes talk about people having a certain 'magnetism'. A magnet attracts, and Jesus certainly attracted people to Himself
We know of twelve disciples who decided to give up their way of life to take on His Way of Life. And yet we are told prophetically, "He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to Him, nothing in His appearance that we should desire Him". So why did these men give up their ways to go His Way? Jesus was not wealthy; He had nothing to give them in monetary terms, so they were not attracted by wealth. He had no status; He was not a powerful figure politically, militarily, or religiously, so they were not attracted by His position in society. We are told about Jesus, "He made Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness"
So what attracted people to Him? What attracts people to Him still, today? When Jesus spoke to the crowd His words were powerful: "When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at His teaching, because He taught as One who had authority, and not as their teachers of the Law"
Perhaps it was His authority that attracted people? We are told that Jesus was fully human but also that He had Your "very nature". Perhaps it was His humanity, a perfect specimen, that attracted us? Or Your very nature, that drew people to Him. Magnetism? Jesus the Positive attracts the negative, the broken, the lost
Thank You for drawing me in love; may You attract others through me

Heavenly Father, when life is hard and we feel threatened, sometimes people say, "It's a jungle out there". Rudyard Kipling wrote in 'The Jungle Book', "Now this is the law of the jungle, as old and as true as the sky, And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die. As the creeper that girdles the tree trunk, the law runneth forward and back; for the strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack"
Sometimes people live by this, seeking out a 'pack' to live in, which in our society can mean joining a gang or some sort of secret society, to which allegiance is pledged. There may be some sort of initiation required, a ceremony, some words recited or an action to prove loyalty
But Your Word tells us there is One God, and it is to You that we should pledge our allegiance; "I AM the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me"
Rather than being like wolves, You describe us as sheep, and You are our Good Shepherd! "When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd". In fact, Jesus had this to say about wolves, "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves"
Jesus however says of Himself, "I AM the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep". You have laid down Your life for us. Keep us safe from all wolves

Hold Me Closer to You
Thursday 18th February
Heavenly Father, we are living in a period of time which the church calendar calls 'Lent'. This made me think about 'lent', am I living on 'borrowed time'? My life is on loan from You, time belongs to You and You have allotted a certain number of days to me
Your servant Job tells us in Your Word, "A person's days are determined, You have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed... a man dies and is laid low; he breathes his last and is no more... If only You would hide me in the grave and conceal me till Your anger has passed! If only You would set me a time and then remember me! If someone dies will they live again?"
We now know the answer to Job's question, Jesus has shown by His life, His death, and His resurrection, that there is life after death. There is a phrase spoken about a prisoner heading to execution, ‘Dead man walking’
Thank You that I was a 'dead man walking' but now I am a new creation, no more in condemnation, here in the grace of God I stand. I am a living man, and death has ‘lost its sting’. Your Word tells us, "Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the Law. But thanks be to God! He gives us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ". Job concludes, "I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end He will stand on the earth"
May I spend my time on earth wisely, bringing Your life to any dead man walking. Thank You

Wednesday 17th February
Heavenly Father, thank You for playing the lead role in the story of my life. I know that far too often I try to steal the limelight and make myself the star but I know that Jesus should be heading the cast list and I should be there in a supporting role
Lord Jesus, it is You around whom the action should be centred, not me
It is You who brings healing
It is You who inspires people
It is You who give people hope
It is You who brings people peace
It is You who calms the storm
It is You who gives people access to Your Father in Heaven
It is You who opens the door to the throne room
It is You who people come to see, who people want to see, not me
It is such a privilege to be even involved in this story, being there to witness all that You do. As soon as the action centres on me it becomes far less interesting and people lose interest, which is not surprising as I have nothing to offer except a broken life that is being constantly renewed and repaired by You
Like the man who was brought to You on the mat because he couldn't walk, You were the star of his life too. He is only remembered because You forgave his sin and then said to him, "I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home"
The woman at the well is remembered because You spoke to her; starred in her life
The Roman Centurion is remembered because You healed his servant who lay at home paralysed
Father, thank You for sending Jesus to be my Saviour, friend, and King. I ask that He will always be the centre of attention

Jesus Be The Centre
Tuesday 16th February
Heavenly Father, thank You that You care about my whole being; You want my whole being to be well. My wellbeing is Your concern, so much so that You came to walk the earth, demonstrating Your concern for us, the beings You had created. You wanted us to have shalom, peace in every area of our lives
Lord, Your Shalom is being well, a being who is well, at peace, in every area of life: physically, emotionally, spiritually, vocationally, relationally, and financially, and every other good -ally! Jesus is our ally! Jesus is like no other ally, everything He did is for our benefit and for Your glory. You are Jehovah Shalom!
When Gideon met with You he exclaimed, "Alas, Sovereign Lord! I have seen the Angel of the Lord face to face!" But You said to him, "Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die". So Gideon built an altar to You and called it 'The Lord is Peace'. Jehovah Shalom
With some allies a treaty can be broken, but You made an eternal promise, "The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged"
And Jesus also made an eternal promise, "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever - the Spirit of Truth... you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you"
May I never be discouraged, but always encouraged because You are with me. You are my strength and shield and peace!

Monday 15th February
Heavenly Father, there are some days when I really need to be on my toes, as the Bible says, "Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come"
The Bible is talking about the day of Jesus' return, but I am thinking about when I am asked to look after my grandchildren. It has been a while since I saw them due to lockdown, but I remember being ready to make a quick move to catch them if they fell, or to guide them away from something they should not touch
Thank You that You do this for me! You are alert! You are on guard! You are there to guide me every step of the Way. But You also want me to be alert and on my guard as the enemy will try to trip me up at any and every opportunity he has. In another passage You tell us, "Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour"
Being devoured does not sound good to me! I know if I saw a lion in my back garden I would definitely be alert and of sober mind! Help me to stay on my toes and not be caught flat footed
It is certainly true that no one knows when Jesus will return, so I want to be ready, it could be any time. How do I make sure I am ready? "He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God”
Help me to act justly and love mercy. Only You, God of all grace, can restore me and make me strong, firm and steadfast as I walk with You. Thank You
