Tuesday  14th October

Heavenly Father, there is a common phrase which I occasionally hear, and sometimes use myself. "This is doing my head in." Jesus told this parable: "Suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbours together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ " I can well imagine that as she searches, at first unsuccessfully, she may well be saying to herself, "This is doing my head in"
 
I know from experience, even today, that being unable to find something can be very frustrating. Having searched apparently everywhere, and then gone and looked in exactly the same places again, to no avail, eventually the coin, or whatever it is, turns up. I can understand the woman in the parable calling her friends and neighbours. In my situation I might simply call out, "Found it!"
 
Lord, You used this parable to explain about how You feel, and about all Heaven feels, about someone who turns from their sinful ways and decides to follow You. "In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Every day it seems there is more to find about You
 
I wonder if there is also rejoicing over each new discovery. I know there was great rejoicing when the Covid vaccine was discovered. And great rejoicing when the two World Wars were declared over. Your Word reminds us: "Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness"
 
Help me to look for Your mercies, Your compassions every day. After all, they are new every morning. They are waiting to be found. And when I find them, may I rejoice and tell everyone what I have found; especially those who struggle with the Gospel as it "Does their head in." Thank You

Monday  13th October

Heavenly Father, help me to be patient as I sit here with You. It is so easy to be rushing off to something else. Even as I sit here with You, talking to You and listening to You, I can be distracted, my mind seems to have a mind of its own; it wanders off so easily. It can be a new gadget to play with, or the gym to get to. (OK, so we both laughed at the idea of the gym!) Even something good, harmless, fun, can be a temptation away from You. Gardening, walking, composing a song, or even building a temple!
 
Lord Jesus, You told a parable about a man who prepared a banquet, and invited people to attend. “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’ Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.' Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come’"
 
This is how it can be when we are invited to sit with You and receive our daily bread, to feed on Your Word, receiving Spiritual refreshment, wisdom, knowledge, and guidance. It can even get to the point where we don't sit with You at all. Other things take priority, becoming idols in our lives, and like the people invited to the banquet, we make what seem to be quite valid excuses, and thus our relationship with You becomes distant. Right at the beginning, the temptation that led to the breakdown in our relationship seemed harmless enough, just an apple, but the consequences were disastrous
 
Lord, help me to resist the temptation to put anything before You. Help me to see what has become 'the apple of my eye' instead of You. There is time enough to do other things after You have finished talking to me, whether by reading Your Word, singing worship songs or through prayer. You are enough for me. You came so that we could have life in abundance, and it starts in Your presence
 
King David recognised this! "You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand." The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing. "Look, I AM coming soon! My reward is with Me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. I AM the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the Tree of Life and may go through the gates into the city." Thank You
