Park Baptist Church has recently opened a debt counselling centre in partnership with Christians Against Poverty (CAP) to empower some of the poorest and most disadvantaged members of this constituency to help themselves out of debt

We will be holding an information day at the church at 2:00pm on Monday 30th January at the church and would love to see you there

CAP is a national debt counselling charity offering free help to anyone, regardless of their religious beliefs, releasing them from the pressure of debt through a combination of face-to-face advice, financial education, budgeting, and insolvency services

Research undertaken by the Centre for Social Justice has identified personal debt as one of five main pathways to poverty in the UK, alongside family breakdown, educational failure, worklessness, and addiction. Personal debt can have a particularly devastating effect for people on low incomes. A recent survey revealed that 65% of CAP clients said they missed meals before seeking help, 55% visited their GP due to the pressure of debt, and a shocking 36% contemplated suicide as a way out of their situation, before seeking help

The unique, long-term, and in-depth nature of our service complements the excellent work of other debt advice agencies such as the CAB. Partnering with the local church and maintaining strong relationships with local welfare organisations ensures that the holistic and often complex needs of clients can be addressed

Our method is proven to work for even the poorest and most marginalised in society, with 94% of clients rating our service as ‘life transforming’ or ‘a great help’. In the words of one client, “twelve months ago, I was suicidal and there was no way out – I lived in a black hole. Now, I’m coming out of it ten times better, and I’m working – all thanks to CAP. Your help has been the best I could have hoped for”

It is my hope that you would be happy to recommend our service to people you meet who are in debt, and to local advice and support agencies that may be encountering people in debt. You can also find out more about us by visiting our website: www.capuk.org

Thank you for your faithful service to Great Yarmouth. I believe that with your help, our new centre will make a real difference to the lives of many people in this community

Rev John Graver, from Norwich CAP Debt Centre, said at the launch service yesterday “I have been involved with CAP for 17 years now seeing hundreds of people being set free from the prison of debt. I have been managing the CAP Debt Centre in Norwich for 2 years and praying for new centres to open in the area. So I was delighted to be part of the CAP Debt Centre launch at Park Baptist Church and know that many people in Yarmouth will find the great blessing of finding hope in the midst of the darkness of unmanageable debt”
