Heavenly Father, help me to focus on You for the next few minutes. There are so many other things to think about that sometimes it is hard to find time for You. I know You are there all day and all night, but my many "Thank You" and "Oh Lord" sighs are not much of a conversation
There is so much to be thankful for, and I am truly thankful for all that You are doing to sustain me throughout the day. I'm missing my precious time with You when I walk round the village and we chat together. That is when so many of my 'prayer thoughts' come; my folder had only one thought in it today, but it didn't feel like it was for today
Thank You that You never let me down and every day You provide me everything I need, including thoughts for prayer. So often You speak to me through the Bible, Your Word to us, a manual for living and the story of Your relationship with us. "The Word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart". Thank You for this
Your Word speaks to us so profoundly and so deeply, it really is amazing how relevant it is each day. It separates what is in my soul and what is in my spirit; my soul centred on my thoughts and feelings, my emotions and my desires; my spirit alive to You, connected to You, communicating with You, enabling me to know Your thoughts and plans for me. That connection is what I miss when I don't take time to focus on You
Thank You for these last few minutes together. As I sometimes hear said, "I am too busy NOT to pray!" You spoke to me through Your Word in my devotional: "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only that which is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen"
Guide me today in each moment that I might be of some use to You. I love You Lord. Thank You
Amen

Wednesday 14th May
Heavenly Father, sometimes life can be very confusing. We can be faced with situations that we can't understand or comprehend; things just don't add up! There are choices to be made but we don't know what to do for the best. After looking at all the facts and all the options we seem to be none the wiser
You tell us, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight". Thank You for this Lord. When I look at all the facts and all the options, I am leaning on my own understanding; when I trust in You with all my heart another set of facts and options come into play: Your Sovereign will
When I submit to You the number of paths before me starts to reduce and become straight. Paths where there are bends and kinks, with side roads and distractions can be dismissed; they are not Your Way. Paths where there is love and compassion, sacrifice and mercy will be Your Way. Paths where there is kindness and tenderness will be Your Way
The path where we wash the feet of another will be Your Way. The path where we carry the burden for someone else will be Your Way. The path where we live a life like Jesus will be Your Way. When I walk Your path, live life Your Way, I never walk alone, for You promise to be with me, and You will bring others to help along the Way; humans and angels. "Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the Way, walk in it'"
Lord, help me to hear Your voice clearly so I can make good choices and follow the path You think is best. Not my will, but Yours be done
Amen

Tuesday 13th May
Heavenly Father, thank You for the Eternal Triangle. I suppose I could be talking about You as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, but that is not where my thoughts began! Thank You Lord for all the people I know. For all I know. For all who know me. For all who know Jesus. I know them, they know me and we both know Him: The Eternal Triangle! A relationship affirmed in Heaven by Jesus
Some are my closest friends, the ones I share my deeper secrets with. Some are like brothers; like David and Jonathan in Your Word. Some I know well, meet regularly, love dearly. Some are like ships that pass in the night, we have met only once, or we meet very rarely. I have long standing friendships, even from school days and college days. Some I have never actually met, but they pray regularly with me and for me, and for Jane and my family. I love them all; thank You for them all
As You have commanded: "Love your neighbour as you love yourself". Your Word tells us: "A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for times of adversity" emphasising the benefits of true friendship. You also tell us: "Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labour. If either of them falls, one can help the other up. But woe to the one who falls and has no one to help them up"
Lord, we all go through tough times, as Jane and I have recently, and are now. We have been greatly encouraged and comforted by the stream of visits, texts, WhatsApp messages and emails in support of us at this time. Sometimes it is hard to keep up and reply to them all! Lord, bless them and keep them; Lord make Your face shine upon them and be gracious to them; Lord, turn Your face toward them and give them peace
Having said all this, thank You Father, for my friend Jesus, who is always with me, closer than a brother; may I be a blessing to Him, as He is to me
Amen

Monday 12th May
Heavenly Father, thank You for showing us the Way to live. Thank You for shining a Light in this dark world. Thank You for giving us a Truth to believe in, the Truth; One we can trust, One that is unchanging, One we can rely on, One that is eternal. Thank You for Jesus
Lord Jesus, thank You that when we cursed You and crucified You, You said: "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing". Thank You that when we hated You, You loved us; You tell us: "Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you." This is how You lived; this is Your Way
When a woman was caught in adultery, You didn't condemn her, You defended he, and told her so! After writing on the ground, her accusers dispersed and You asked her: "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" She replied "No one, sir". And You said, "Then neither do I condemn you. Go now and leave your life of sin"
Condemnation is not Your Way. For people struggling in all kinds of ways, You said: "Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest". You bring hope to the hopeless! Your Word tells us: "We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf". Thank You that Your Way is not one of vengeance, but one of love and compassion
Thank You that Your Way is not one of prosecution but one of release and freedom. Thank You that You do not carry out a death sentence, but You offer eternal life. Thank You that Your Way is not the way of the world but the Way to Heaven. Lord, I choose Your Way
Amen
