Make Kindness Great Again
Does anyone else get fed up with certain pushy, self-important politicians trying to look harder and tougher; coming up with strong put downs for their opposition or detractors; vying for position in group photos, etc. It seems that the media and many people will only support them when they can ridicule people’s arguments and outdo their rivals at mud throwing
And does anyone else wonder whether people posing and pouting on social media are really OK? Is it really a good look to strut your stuff and big up your booty? (Have I even got those phrases right?) Is it just a bit of fun or pressure to look right? And what are young men thinking when they sign up to movements that put down women? Does that make them more attractive to anyone?
I know I may sound like an old fuddy duddy but please hear me out. What makes a politician or an influencer or a movement worth following? And what makes someone happy with who they are?
Now that I’ve got that out of my system let me offer an alternative. I am suggesting that kindness wins people respect; that listening and learning from others has more positive outcomes; that encouraging others can lead to everyone having better self-esteem. And that perhaps, if we’re looking for an example to follow, we might want to start with someone like Jesus who “walked among us full of grace and truth”. (John 1:14). Whether you can go the whole way and believe he is the Son of God or not, I recommend we all take a closer look at the way he lived. Grace and truth might not get on the front page of the papers or light up the internet or be a popular slogan for a baseball cap! But it could make our lives more worth living. Worth a try?
