Vandals cause heartbreak at Yarmouth Minster
Stone-throwing vandals have caused "heartbreak" after smashing windows at the Great Yarmouth church
The suspects caused almost £12,000 of damage at the Minster Church of St Nicholas in Great Yarmouth, which is believed to be the largest parish church in England
It is already the fourth in a devastating series of criminal incidents suffered by the Grade II listed building over the past 12 months. The church was previously broken into on three occasions, with thieves taking money from the donation box and also damaging property
Norfolk Police received a report of criminal damage at the church on Thursday, May 22. The incident happened between 7pm on May 21 and 7pm on May 22
Wendy Betts, the 75-year-old church warden, said: "It’s really heartbreaking"
Replacing the windows will cost almost £12,000, and on top of that sum the church is also considering installing a guard-rail priced at around £4,000. The window has been boarded up while the church waits for a company to remove the damaged panes of glass
Ms Betts said: ”This is a people’s church. I think it’s so sad these things are happening”
